Punjabi Bollywood

Today’s second post is Punjabi Bollywood. Punjab is a culturally rich state of India. Folk dance forms like Bhangra, Gidda and Tappe come from that soil and Bollywood has made its versions of the same, elaborately.

Punjabi culture and I have some connection since perhaps some previous birth. Like I have said before, I am a South Indian with a Punjabi tadka. The story began from a previous generation of mine. My maternal aunt, Masi, had performed the song, Ude jab jab zulfe teri… from Naya Daur (1957), several times on stage with my Hemu Aunty (Actor Hema Malini). The Bhangra was choreographed by Hema Malini’s mother, Jaya Chakravorthy Aunty. My Masi was chosen because she is tall. Once her fake moustache dropped off her face. She just pushed it away and continued to dance.

Maybe that attitude runs in my blood since when my Mom choreographed Bhangra for me when I was studying in the tenth grade, I got a lot of appreciation for my performance. I have chosen some of my favorite Bollywood songs, based on Punjabi folk dances, for this post. I hope you like them.
