Today’s fourth post is the analysis of the song, Cheherepe khushi cha jati hai, from the Bollywood movie, Waqt (1965). The song has been analyzed on the basis of its context and visualization.

Movie – Waqt (1965)

The song, Cheherepe khushi cha jati hai, appears in 1965 flick, Waqt (Time). It is a disaster drama produced by B R Chopra and directed by Yash Chopra under the banner of B R Films. The movie starred Balraj Sahni, Achala Sachdev, Raaj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Sadhana, Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Madan Puri, Rehman, etc.

Waqt (1965) triggered off the series of films with the lost-and-found formula. This formula was originally seen in Kismat (1943) starring Ashok Kumar before this movie.

Lala Kedarnath (Balraj Sahni) has 3 sons, with the same birthday (different years). During their birthday celebrations, they meet a famous astrologer, who tells the Lala not to be proud of his achievements and not to be too optimistic about the future as fate plays an important role in life. Lala Kedarnath ignores the prediction and gets preoccupied with plans for an even wealthier future.

Post the birthday celebration when the Lala sings a song for his wife, Lakshmi (Achala Sachdev), an earthquake devastates the entire area and the family members get separated. Kedarnath’s eldest son is taken into the orphanage of an oppressor (Jeevan). Post a severe beating, he runs away. Kedarnath visits the orphanage to meet his son. On hearing of the manager’s misbehavior, Kedarnath kills the man and is imprisoned.

2 decades later, Raja (Raaj Kumar) is an undercover thief, who lives the life of a rich man. He is in love with Meena (Sadhana), the daughter of another rich man, Mittal (Manmohan Krishna). But Meena is in love with Ravi (Sunil Dutt), who is actually Kedarnath’s second son, who has just completed law. Ravi has actually been adopted by Khanna (Surendra Nath), and a playboy. Khanna happens to be Mittal’s very good friend. The adopted son is expected at Mittal’s home to start practice. When Ravi arrives at the airport where Meena is waiting for him, Raja is also present. Raja realizes that Meena is in love with Ravi.

On the other hand, Khanna’s daughter, Renu (Sharmila Tagore) is in love with Vijay (Shashi Kapoor), who is Kedarnath’s third son and has been brought up by Lakshmi. Vijay considers himself a jinx because the family faced a devastating separation on his birthday. Renu and Vijay are classmates in the same college and she is in love with him. Due to Lakshmi’s health issues, Vijay has to move to the city to earn money for his mother’s surgery. He’s working as Raja’s boss Chinoy’s (Rahman) driver.

Raja realizes that Meena and Ravi have fallen in love with each other and decides to kill Ravi. With this intention, when he enters Ravi’s room, by mistake he drops a photo placed on top of a side table. The photo turns out to be Ravi’s childhood picture. Raja recognizes the picture as his younger brother’s and decides against killing Ravi. He picks up the childhood picture and leaves without disturbing the sleeping man.

Renu and her parents are visiting his friend, Mittal and during Ravi and Meena’s engagement party at the Mittal home, Renu insists that Meena sing a song and the latter croons this song.

Song – Cheherepe khushi cha jati hai

The lyrics of the song, Cheherepe khushi cha jati hai, were penned by Sahir Ludhianvi and the music was composed by Ravi Shankar Sharma (Ravi).

The girl says, “Happiness appears on my face. My eyes reflect my inner pleasure. When you call me your own, I feel proud of myself.”

The video opens with Sadhana beginning to play the piano and Sharmila Tagore leaning on the piano. Sunil Dutt walks toward her from another room. Raaj Kumar also climbs some steps to the large platform where the piano is placed.

Sadhana begins to sing this song. Raaj Kumar goes and stands near Sunil Dutt. Sharmila Tagore very delicately walks down some steps to the platform where the piano has been placed.

Raaj Kumar knows that Sadhana is singing about Sunil Dutt. The former looks at the latter but a bit sadly. Shashi Kapoor enters the house and joins the house staff. Sharmila Tagore is happy and welcomes him from a distance with a smile.

Rahman is also present at the party. Sadhana continues to sing and Sunil Dutt leans toward her on the piano. Raaj Kumar stands on the other side of the piano. Soon, the song peters out and the video also ends as Sadhana stops playing the piano.

Artists

Asha Bhonsle sang this song for Sadhana. Sharmila Tagore, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Rahman and others are also seen in the video.

Cultural Influence

There’s no cultural influence on this song. It is a melodious and dreamy romantic song where the heroine says that she is proud that she means something to her beloved. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
