Movie – Waqt (1965)

The song, Maine ek khwabsa dekha hai, appears in 1965 flick Waqt (Time). It is a disaster drama produced by B R Chopra and directed by Yash Chopra under the banner of B R Films. The movie starred Balraj Sahni, Achala Sachdev, Raaj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Sadhana, Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Madan Puri, Rehman, etc.

Waqt (1965) triggered off the series of films with the lost-and-found formula. This formula was originally seen in Kismat (1943) starring Ashok Kumar before this movie.

Lala Kedarnath (Balraj Sahni) has 3 sons, with the same birthday (different years). During their birthday celebrations, they meet a famous astrologer, who tells the Lala not to be proud of his achievements and not to be too optimistic about the future as fate plays an important role in life. Lala Kedarnath ignores the prediction and gets preoccupied with plans for an even wealthier future.

Post the birthday celebration when the Lala sings a song for his wife, Lakshmi (Achala Sachdev), an earthquake devastates the entire area and the family members get separated. Kedarnath’s eldest son is taken into the orphanage of an oppressor (Jeevan). Post a severe beating, he runs away. Kedarnath visits the orphanage to meet his son. On hearing of the manager’s misbehavior, Kedarnath kills the man and is imprisoned.

2 decades later, Raja (Raaj Kumar) is an undercover thief, who lives the life of a rich man. He is in love with Meena (Sadhana), the daughter of another rich man, Mittal (Manmohan Krishna). But Meena is in love with Ravi (Sunil Dutt), who is actually Kedarnath’s second son, who has just completed law. Ravi has actually been adopted by Khanna (Surendra Nath), and a playboy. Khanna happens to be Mittal’s very good friend. The adopted son is expected at Mittal’s home to start practise. When Ravi arrives at the airport where Meena is waiting for him, Raja is also present. Raja realizes that Meena is in love with Ravi.

On the other hand, Khanna’s daughter, Renu (Sharmila Tagore) is in love with Vijay (Shashi Kapoor), who is Kedarnath’s third son and has been brought up by Lakshmi. Vijay considers himself a jinx because the family faced a devastating separation on his birthday. Renu and Vijay are classmates in the same college and she is in love with him.

One day, Raja requests that he wants to visit Meena’s place for a cuppa tea made by her. She tells him that she would be honored to serve him. But Ravi visits her before Raja reaches her home and swipes her off her feet. Ravi takes her via a boat from her backyard and Raja is left watching them leave.

Ravi and Meena also converse over the phone. During one such conversation, they sing this song.

Video – Maine ek khwabsa dekha hai

Cinematography is by Dharam Chopra. Dance choreography is by Prem Dhawan-Harbans.

The video opens with Sunil Dutt beginning to sing this song and imagining that Sadhana appears behind some fog in a garden. She is walking toward him. Then, they move away from the camera.

Back to reality, she also joins in the song, over the phone. She begins to imagine that they are moving about a fog-filled garden. The scene shifts to natural locales where they are seen walking around.

The song peters out soon and the video also ends as the pair is seen sleeping on their own beds, near their phones. Composer Ravi used minimum orchestration to compose this very dreamy and melodious song.

Artists

Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhonsle sang this song for Sunil Dutt and Sadhana.

Cultural Influence

There’s no cultural influence on this song. It is a melodious and dreamy romantic duet where the hero and the heroine talk about their dreams, in which they see each other. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
