Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma Expires of Cardiac Arrest. That’s the sad news that came to be heard this afternoon. Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma was the first part of the Bollywood music duo, Shiv-Hari. He was a santoor player and Bollywood music composer, born to Singer Uma Dutt Sharma. His mother tongue was Dogri.
At 5 years of age, he began learning vocals and tabla from his Dad and then he began learning santoor at 13 years of age. 1955 saw him perform for the first time in Mumbai.
Before Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, santoor used to be a folk instrument. It was he, who propagated the idea of using it for classical performances. In collaboration with Flautist Hariprasad Chaurasiya, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma began composing music for Bollywood as Shiv-Hari; beginning with Silsila (1980).
