Depending on the professional occupation that you want to be considered for, to qualify you must meet at least one of the following basic educationand/or experience requirements:
GS-1529 (Mathematical Statistician): Degree*: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.OR
Combination of education and experience — at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GS-1530 (Statistics): Degree*: That included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in math & stats combined but with at least 6 semester hours in stats), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, engineering; or social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, or psychology.OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1 above, plus additional education & experience. The experience should include professional statistical work such as sampling, collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, & applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple & multiple correlation, analysis of variance, & tests of significance. *Degree is defined as successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements generally as stated.
In addition to meeting at least one of the basic education and/or experience requirements described above, you must also meet the following specialized experience.
For the GS-11 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: applying mathematical statistical theories to execute statistical and survey projects. Assisting in planning and implementing ongoing statistical surveys; participating in developing methods for analyzing and publicizing data; recommending proposals for modifying survey, analysis, publication, and communication techniques; conducting review of data reports and statistical summaries.
