The third post for today is the analysis of the song, Jaanu meri Jaan, from the Bollywood movie Shaan (1980). The song has been analyzed on the basis of its context and visualization.
Movie – Shaan (1980)
The song, Jaanu meri Jaan, was featured in the Sippy Films’ crime action movie Shaan (1980), produced by G P Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Bindiya Goswami, Parveen Babi, Johnny Walker, Mazhar Khan, etc.
Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) and Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) are cheated by Renu (Bindiya Goswami) and her uncle (Johnny Walker) and land inside the lockup. Their elder brother, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shiv (Sunil Dutt) gets them released and pulls them up for their wayward ways. For the young men, it is a regular thing and their brother’s lectures do not have any effect on them. To find the girl, who had cheated them, they decide to contact a poor street-smart differently-abled man called Abdul (Mazhar Khan).
Through Abdul, the brothers locate Renu and her uncle. Renu and her uncle compromise with the brothers and the foursome join hands for future ‘projects’ in cheating people. During one of these ‘collaborations’, they meet Sunita (Parveen Babi). Ravi and Renu are in love, so are Vijay and Sunita. Everything is going fine. But soon, Shiv is killed by the goons and the happy lives of the 2 brothers go for a toss. The brothers enlist the help of Abdul once again to find the person, who killed their elder brother.
In the meantime, as the girls are coming to meet the young men; the former get offended due to the latter’s behaviors and leave the place together. The 2 young men sing this song to placate the girls.
Song – Jaanu meri Jaan
The lyrics of the song, Jaanu meri Jaan, were penned by Anand Bakshi and were set to tune by Rahul Dev Burman (R D Burman or Panchamda).
The song goes, “Darling, you are mine and I am yours. This fact is known by the entire India.”
Video – Jaanu meri Jaan
The cinematography is by S M Anwar. Dance choreography is by P L Raj.
The video opens with Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor looking at each other and the music beginning. Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami are walking away from them and the 2 male actors follow the former.
The 2 girls get into a double decker BEST bus. The 2 male actors try to join them in the bus but the conductor stops them. The girls are happy and find a seat for themselves. Amitabh Bachchan walks hurriedly behind the slow-moving bus.
He also begins to sing the song, looking at Parveen Babi, who is sitting close to a window, inside the bus. The girls decide to change their seats. Now, Bindiya Goswami is sitting near the window and Shashi Kapoor tries to placate her.
The girls go to the upper deck of the bus. The 2 male actors are still following the bus, this time on a 2-driver bicycle. The 2 girls are sitting one behind the other, inside the bus. Amitabh Bachchan stands up on the backseat, balancing on Shashi Kapoor’s shoulder.
When Shashi Kapoor takes over the song, Bindiya Goswami pulls out a hairclip and aims it with a rubber band at one of the tyres of the bicycle, puncturing it. As the 2 male actors fall off the bicycle, the 2 girls are left laughing.
Immediately, one of the bus’s tyres also gets punctured and all the passengers climb down. When the 2 girls also are about to leave the bus; they are stopped by Amitabh Bachchan, who is wearing the uniform of the bus conductor.
Shashi Kapoor is on the driver’s seat, again in a uniform. Amitabh Bachchan almost pushes the 2 girls, without touching them, toward the front end of the bus. Shashi Kapoor takes the bus, toward more sparsely developed places and drives the bus in a haphazard manner.
Due to the movement of the bus, the girls fall into the seat, at the front. Shashi Kapoor pushes the window behind him and tries to pacify Bindiya Goswami, who’s sitting on a seat nearby. There’s a slight smile on her lips.
Amitabh Bachchan also tries to soothe Parveen Babi, who smiles as well. Now, Shashi Kapoor is sitting close to Bindiya Goswami, continuing to sing. Then, the 2 male actors place their caps on their own co-stars’ heads.
Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami are mollified and join in the song. Both the pairs sway to the tune of the song. They perform a few steps, within the space available inside the bus. The song and the video end, abruptly as the pairs continue to sway within the bus.
Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar have sung this song for Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami. Other actors are also seen in this video.
I just love this croon by the 4 stalwarts Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and her sister Usha Mangeshkar. It is not just because of the vocals by the legendary singers but also because it has been picturized differently, amusingly and amazingly. The song and the artists are fantastic. The video is watchable for the male actors’ antics.
