Movie – Hera Pheri (2000)

The song, Humba leela humba leelo, was featured in the A G Films’ comedy Hera Pheri (2000), directed by Priyadarshan and produced by A G Nadiadwala. The movie starred Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, etc.

Shyam (Suniel Shetty) is trying to get a job at the bank where his dead father had worked. Raju Sinha (Akshay Kumar) is a day-dreamer. Shyam is sent to Baburao (Paresh Rawal) for renting a room to stay by the older man’s restaurateur friend and he has to share the room with Raju. Raju has not paid the rent for several months. On the other hand, Shyam pays the rent immediately and Baburao prefers him to stay there over Raju. Raju and Shyam do not see eye-to-eye from day one.

Anuradha (Tabu) is also a contender for the job, Shyam is trying to get and Raju helps her get Shyam’s no-objection letter. As a result, she bags the job and Shyam threatens her and the bank manager (Asrani) that he would file a complaint of bribery against both of them. The bank manager convinces Anuradha to entice Shyam to fall in love with her but it doesn’t work.

Shyam catches Raju creating the impression of working with a prestigious company, for his mother (Sulbha Arya). But Shyam is good enough not to expose Raju.

Suddenly, Khadak Singh (Om Puri) appears there. He’s from Shyam’s village, saying that the latter had taken money from him to come to the city looking for the job. And that Khadak Singh had saved the money for his sister’s marriage. When this Punjabi man meets his friend, Shyam promises that he would be coming to the village with the money within a few days. Shyam is under the impression that he would be able to get some money out of Anuradha, in return for giving up his right to the bank job.

But when Shyam visits Anuradha’s home, it turns out that she is living in dire poverty and has not paid the rent for her house for several months. Her mother needs psychiatric treatment. I know what he experiences right then because I have been there. I have seen several good opportunities being snatched away from my hands because of bias.

Shyam returns to Baburao’s home and informs him of what had happened. By now, Shyam and Raju have become friends and they sing this song with Baburao after a session of alcoholic drinks.
