Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements: Chemistry Series, 1320: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: At the GS-12: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience: – Experience conducting research focused on human nutrition; AND
– Experience performing ONE of the following: Processing biological samples (including blood, urine, stool, and saliva) in support of human nutrition research; or in support of studies in animal model representing human nutrient metabolism or nutrition-related metabolic disease of humans, and organizing these samples into an inventory system for later retrieval from frozen storage for further analysis; or Conducting assays to assess nutrient status and other biomarkers such as markers of inflammation and immune function, endocrine status, gene expression, and metabolomic analyses in humans and organizing these samples into an inventory system for later retrieval from frozen storage for further analysis; or Conducting physical assessments of humans to include the assessment of resting energy expenditure, physical activity, physical fitness and body composition analysis using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bioimpedance analysis. Physical Demands: The work is generally sedentary including both deskwork and bench chemistry work. Good physical dexterity, eyesight, and hand-eye coordination are required for many analytical procedures and for operating or trouble-shooting instruments. Work Environment: Exposure to chemicals, chemical vapors, concentrated and dilute acids will occur. Some work is performed in a fume hood. Some procedures may require the use of radioisotopes. Some exposure to biohazardous materials such as human specimens including blood, urine and feces will occur. Adherence to regulations to ensure safety and health of the incumbent and his/her employees is mandatory. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
