Today’s second post is the analysis of the song, Dillagine di hawa, from the Bollywood movie Dostana (1980). The song has been analyzed based on its context and visualization.

Movie – Dostana (1980)

Dillagine di hawa… had appeared in the 1980-released hit action movie Dostana (Friendship) directed by Raj Khosla and produced by Yash Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions. The hit movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Paintal, Pran, Helen, etc.

Vijay Varma (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi Kapoor (Shatrughan Sinha) are the best of friends, who studied in the same school. Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) is a modern girl, who wears bold dresses. Inspector Vijay gives her a lecture about girls wearing decent dresses after an incident of eve-teasing. After a few altercations between them, Vijay’s work as a police officer impresses her and she falls in love with him. She begins to wear ‘decent’ clothes. By then, even he has fallen in love with her. They begin dating and at this point they sing this song.

Song – Dillagine di hawa

Anand Bakshi and Lakshimi-Pyare have been credited with the lyrics and tune of Dillagine di hawa…

The song goes thus, “A pleasant wit resulted in fire. And our friendship became love.”

Video – Dillagine di hawa

The cinematographer is Nariman A Irani. Dance choreography is by Manohar Naidu.

The video opens with the lead pair smiling at each other and hugging, at the discotheque. People are clapping and the music begins. In the next shot, Amitabh Bachchan is waiting for Zeenat Aman, who hides behind the glass windows of the gazebo-like restaurant.

He comes out and catches hold of her hand. The leading man begins the song. She also joins in the song. A man is taking their pictures. The lead pair watches picnickers dancing. Zeenat Aman also begins to dance.

One of the picnickers, a man, pulls the edge of a girl’s sari, in front of everybody. The girl returns to him wrapping the sari on her again. This seems quite normal among them! The song peters out and the video also ends as the lead pair gets intimate with each other.

Artists

Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle have sung for Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman. Other actors are also present in the video.

Cultural Influence

This typical filmi song is a romantic one between the lead pair. I love this Kishore-Asha croon. The song and the artists are fantastic. The video is watchable for the same.
