Today’s third post is the analysis of the song, Banake kyon bigadare, from the Bollywood movie Zanjeer (1973). The song has been analyzed based on its context and visualization.

Movie – Zanjeer (1973)

The song, Banake kyon bigadare, appeared in the Prakash Mehra Productions’ action thriller Zanjeer (1973), directed and produced by Prakash Mehra. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Pran, Ajit, etc.

Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) is a police officer, who has seen his parents being murdered as a child. The dream of a masked man on horseback haunts him, every night.

Vijay is a reformist police officer. Despite the warnings of his senior (Iftekhar), he continues to reform the criminals, he meets. One evening, he is invited by Seth Dharam Dayal (Ajit) for a party where Vijay tries to follow the host. On the instructions of the Seth, the man’s girlfriend, Mona (Bindu) performs keeps Vijay away from the Seth, all through the party.

Mala (Jaya Bhaduri) is a street vendor, helping people with sharpening their knives. She is an orphan and is an unwilling eye-witness to a truck driver Goga (Goga Kapoor), carrying illegal stuff and crushing children under his vehicle to escape from the police. Vijay appears to suspect Seth Dharam Dayal, as the mastermind behind the smuggling racket. He meets the older man and informs him that the truckdriver would soon be thrown behind bars because the only eyewitness has been found.

Mala is bribed by the truck driver’s boss. But she is moved by the dead children’s crushed bodies and turns in the money to Vijay. Mala is not safe at night because she lives alone. She escapes a murder attempt and reaches Vijay’s home to take shelter for the night.

Mala and Vijay fall in love with each other. For safety’s sake, Vijay drops Mala at his adopted brother Anil’s place and the street-smart girl gets a makeover, with the help of Anil’s wife Shanti (Nandita Thakur). Soon, Vijay is caught in a web of deceptions and lands in jail for 6 months on false charges of bribery. Mala sings this song at this point.

Song – Banake kyon bigadare

The lyrics of the song, Banake kyon bigadare, were penned by Gulshan Bawra and set to tune by Kalyanji-Anandji.

The girl sings, “O Almighty, you made my future first and then messed up the entire thing. Why?”

The cinematography is by N Satyen.

The video opens with Amitabh Bachchan entering a prison cell wearing prison clothes. The music has also begun. Ajit is seen traveling in a car, smoking in a carefree manner. Jaya Bhaduri begins to sing the song and she has tears in her eyes.

She walks toward the stairs, wipes her tears and leans on the hand rest of the staircase. Nandita Thakur, who plays the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s sister-in-law in the movie, comes out to look at the other female actor.

Jaya Bhaduri remembers the times, she spent with Amitabh Bachchan. She goes to the terrace and leans on the parapet wall. In the next shot, Amitabh Bachchan’s jail term ends and he comes out. The song and the video end there.


Lata Mangeshkar sang this song for Jaya Bhaduri. Amitabh Bachchan, Ajit and other actors are also seen in the video.

Cultural Influence

There is no influence of any culture on this song. This song is one of my favorite Lata Mangeshkar croons. The song and the artists are fantastic. The video is watchable for the same.
