You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following requirements: Specialized Experience: You must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for this position to be filled. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. ~OR~ Education: You must have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a Bachelor’s degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ Combination: You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (as described above). This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation is the normal prerequisite. Diagnostic Medical Testing
Patient Care Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (40 pounds and over); heaving carrying (40 pounds and over); pushing and pulling (up to 4-5 hours a day); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; typing; both hands required; walking/moving (up to 6 hours); standing (up to 6 hours); sitting (up to 4 hours); repeated bending/rising from a sitting position (up to 6 hours); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination (may include fine motor coordination) simultaneously; hearing (aid permitted); verbal and written communication (up to 6 hours); and the ability to see with or without assistance (i.e.; eye glasses, magnifying glass).
