Movie – Dil Tera Deewana (1962)

The song, Dhadakne lagta hai mera dil tere naamse, appeared in the Padmini Pictures’ rom-com Dil Tera Deewana (1962), produced and directed by B R Panthulu. The movie starred Shammi Kapoor, Mala Sinha, Mahmood, etc.

Mohan (Shammi Kapoor) is a foolhardy and rebellious son of Diwan Badriprasad (Ulhas). The young man is not always where he is expected to be. One day, Badriprasad and his wife (Mumtaz Begum) are wondering where their son is. At that point, Mohan is at the Rebel Club, singing this song.

Song – Dhadakne lagta hai mera dil tere naamse

The lyrics of the song, Dhadakne lagta hai mera dil tere naamse, were penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and were set to tune by Shankar-Jaikishan.

The man says, “My heart beats on hearing your name. Looks like, now, I have become good-for-nothing.”

Video – Dhadakne lagta hai mera dil tere naamse

The cinematographer is V Ramamurthy.

The video opens with Shammi Kapoor tearing out of a paper poster of a dog by pushing his head out of it. He begins the song by barking like a dog. At every bark, a group of girls turn their faces toward the camera.

Shammi Kapoor joins the group of girls and begins to perform his famous comic antics. He rejects most of the girls and reaches one girl, standing with her back to the camera. Shammi Kapoor faces the girl and begins the song.

The girl turns around and it is actually Mahmood in a female getup! Shammi Kapoor and Mahmood begin to dance together. In between the song, Shammi Kapoor keeps barking. Ulhas is here and seems to be very angry.

Blissfully unaware that the older actor has caught Shammi Kapoor in his ‘wayward’ act, the lead actor continues to sing and dance. The song rises to a crescendo and ends abruptly. The video also ends abruptly at this point.

Artists

Mohammad Rafi has sung this song for Shammi Kapoor. Mahmood, Ulhas and some other artists are also seen in the video.

Cultural Influence

This video is the colorized version of the song picturized on b/w. I just love this Mohd. Rafi croon and Shammi Kapoor’s antics in the video. The song and the artists are fantastic. The video is watchable for the same.
