Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify for the GS-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes developing internal and external communications with social media, media relations and community relations; creating and publishing a variety of multimedia communication products such as news releases, videos, photographs, feature articles, briefings, exhibits, brochures, infographics and fact sheets; providing counsel to organizational leadership and staff regarding public affairs matters and to prepare for media and outreach engagements; and speaking on behalf of an organization with the public and press.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above). To qualify for the GS-13: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes developing a communication strategy for an organization; developing communication materials that convey information about complex and/or controversial programs; providing counsel to organizational leadership and staff regarding public affairs matters and to prepare for media and outreach engagements; and maintaining relationships with media representatives on the local, regional, national and international level.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12 or above). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone–no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
