Movie – 100 Days (1991)

The song, Sun Beliya, was featured in the Jayvijay Enterprises’ psychological thriller 100 Days (1991), directed by Partho Ghosh and produced by Jay Mehta. The movie starred Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, etc.

Devi (Madhuri Dixit) is prone to getting odd dreams while waking up. Once she is playing tennis with her friend, Sudha (Sabeeha) and she gets a vision that a girl is being killed by an unseen man in a black coat. She narrates the dream to her friend and says that something is going to happen. That night, Sudha collects her friends including Sunil (Javed Jaffrey) to make fun of Devi’s daydream. Later, Sunil goes away abroad due to a music contract he has with a company. Devi’s sister, Rama (Moon Moon Sen) disappears and can’t be found despite several attempts of the family.

Five years later, Devi’s dreams still haunt her. Business Tycoon Ram Kumar (Jackie Shroff) enters her life after a tricky situation at the wedding of Sudha. He even finds out where Devi lives and actually buys the opposite bungalow at a higher than the market rate to be close to her.

One day, Sunil appears and convinces Devi to join him for a music event. Ram Kumar is the chief guest at the event and reads out a letter. Nobody except Devi realizes that the letter is a marriage proposal meant for her and written by him.

Ram Kumar spies on Devi and eventually proposes to her, asking her to meet him. She agrees to a date but leaves home before he arrives to take her for the date. Her maid gives him a letter from her saying that he has to find her before 3 PM that day. He reaches the beach resort where she is drinking cola upon cola, 30 seconds before time and he sings this song.

Song – Sun Beliya

The song, Sun Beliya, was written by Dilip K Tahir and set to tune by Raam-Lakshman.

The man sings, “Listen, my Beloved. Thank you. It’s your grace that you came into my life. If you say, I will give my youth to you.”

Video – Sun Beliya

The cinematography is by Arvind Laad. Dance choreography is by Suresh Bhatt-Chinni Prakash.

The video begins with the song beginning in the background and Madhuri Dixit looking around in wonder. I don’t know how she knows without seeing that it is the person, she is waiting for. She moves toward the beach and blows a kiss at the sea.

It’s Jackie Shroff in a water scooter. The other people surrounding her cheer him. Madhuri Dixit runs toward him and they begin to dance together. They perform the song among several running and stationary horses. Soon after, there is a change of scene.

There is a caravan moving slowly along a winding road. Madhuri Dixit is wearing traditional dresses. Jackie Shroff is wearing the same dress he was wearing at the beginning of this song. He is looking for her and finds her inside one of the bullock carts.

It is sundown and Jackie Shroff is looking for Madhuri Dixit at the beach. He is still wearing the same dress. He lifts a large wicker basket and finds her under it. She is wearing a yellow sari. They do some net practice.

I mean they chase each other on a large fishing net. They get down from the fishing net and hug. Soon, the song peters out and the video also ends as they cuddle together, as there comes another set of cheers from the invisible audience.

Artists

S P Balasubramaniam and Lata Mangeshkar have sung this song for Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit. Some others are also seen in the video.

Cultural Influence

There is no influence of any culture on this song. It is just a commercial romantic song, between the hero and the heroine. At a particular point, the heroine wears some traditional gypsy dress. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the dance choreography.
