Qualification Summary
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. Physical Effort:
Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires regular and recurring construction or field inspections, investigations, or surveys in which there is a considerable amount of walking, stooping, bending, climbing and
stretching. Frequently lifts, carries, and handles tools, refrigerant cylinders and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and, occasionally, items weighing more with assistance of material lifting devices or other workers. Also may require long periods of time inputting data into the computer. Working Conditions:
The work is usually performed indoors on concrete surfaces where there is expose to dust; dirt, chemicals, heat, steam, noise, and unpleasant, odors. Occasionally, services equipment outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Employee is continually exposed to bums, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants, noxious gases, fumes, or acids. Exposed to repeated, prolonged, or concentrated amounts of refrigerants. Frequently is subject to sudden temperature changes. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment, such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hard hats, and fire retardant gloves. Sites visited may include remote areas infested by snakes, insects or reptiles. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of the standard methods of combustion, heat transfer principles, fuel boilers and domestic heating units. Ability to use mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units; and air-to-fuel ratios and conversions. Uses combustion analyzer to tune boilers to meet regulatory emissions limits and completes required boiler tuning report form. 2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures policies related to records maintenance and documentation. 3. Skill in reading and applying work orders, blueprints, sketches, and other oral and written instructions.
4. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, and all types of refrigerant recovery units. 5. Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws, regulations, codes and other guidance to make decisions and recommendations concerning assigned HVAC tasks. 6. Knowledge in the theory and properties of the different types of refrigerant the principle and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature. Inspects recovered refrigerant from all types of units and reclaims the refrigerant to be used on other units to reduce the purchase of new refrigerant. 7. Skilled in preparing and presenting effective environmental training sessions and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
