Movie – Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)

The song, Kab tak chup baithe, appears in the Yash-Raj Films’ romrama Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997), directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, etc.

The movie begins with Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) and Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) speaking their minds about the topic of love and life-partner. Pooja believes that God has made someone for her. Rahul disbelieves the whole concept of love and ridicules the idea of the Godsend companion for life. A song is heard in the background, which expresses Pooja’s thoughts.

Post the above song, the next shot itself has another song, performed by Nisha (Karishma Kapoor) with other girls. At the end of this song, Rahul appears and announces a new play, Maya. But when the other troupe members question him about the new play, he says that right then Maya was a concept. When the others insist, Rahul puts his thoughts to words in a song. But, Nisha is not convinced that such a girl could be found on the earth.

On Valentine’s Day, Pooja believes that she would meet her soulmate before the end of the day. On the other hand, Rahul does not believe in anything close to someone being another’s Valentine. He tries to convince Nisha about it. They are at Valentine’s Day party. He also says that the couples dancing together today would split within a few days and would be seen with another person the next year. Unexpectedly, he drops a question – would she live with him for the rest of their lives. But before she replies in the affirmative, he is asked to sing a song.

Pooja is an orphan and lives with her childhood friend Ajay’s (Akshay Kumar) parents, who were her family friends. Ajay lives in London and visits his parents’ home for a few days. At that time, he takes Pooja to Germany for an official-cum-shopping trip and ends the trip by proposing to her. Pooja gives the impression that she has accepted it. She has almost accepted the fact that she would have to make do with Ajay as her beloved husband when… When she encounters Rahul.

Nisha fractures her leg while practicing and Rahul is on the lookout for his Maya. Rahul’s rehearsal hall is next to Pooja’s dance class. One evening, Rahul is in the rehearsal hall and Pooja in her classes. Both are practicing alone at their own places and hear each other performing. They have a kind of jugalbandi and Rahul comes to the classes to watch her dance. That day, he decides that he has found his Maya.

Rahul finds Pooja’s home, through I guess her dance class people, who would be very much willing to share her location details. He convinces her to at least come to the rehearsal hall if not join his troupe as Maya, albeit with a lot of comic punctuations. The troupe’s working style impresses Pooja and she eventually joins them. Step by step, she picks up the type of dance and acting, which are expected of her.

Nisha leaves for London in a half recovery condition because like she states to Rahul that she loves him and he doesn’t love her. Soon, Pooja realizes that it is Rahul’s whistling that she has been hearing often since Valentine’s Day that year. They both realize that they are falling in love with each other. But, they do not confess.

One weekend, Pooja has to visit her dance teacher Tai (Aruna Irani) for her birthday. Rahul comes along to take her there, uninvited. During their stay, Tai realizes that both are in love with each other and tells them to confess, individually. During the wedding of one of the actors of the dance troupe, Rahul tries to get intimate with Pooja and they confess their love for each other, albeit through body language. They sing this song at this point.

Video – Kab tak chup baithe

The cinematography is by Manmohan Singh. Dance choreography is by Shiamak Davar.

The video opens with Madhuri Dixit running toward Shah Rukh Khan and hugging him. They are in the outdoors surrounded by scenic beauty. The music has already begun and she begins to dance. He begins to sing and she joins in. The dance is good. The music is foot-tapping.

But, half of Madhuri Dixit’s dress is transparent, most of the time or exposing her body generously. When she performs some classical steps, he also does so comically. Soon, the song peters out and the video ends as they return to reality as they are still at the wedding venue.

Artists

Udit Narayan sings this song for Shah Rukh Khan and Lata Mangeshkar for Madhuri Dixit.

Cultural Influence

This song is a typical young generation number, which may be liked by older people as well. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
