Qualification Summary
Specialized Experience GS-09: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 for this occupation. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: Manage safety or occupational health program elements; develop and recommending safety policy to higher-level management; applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, theories, and practices to resolve technical matters; develop safety and occupational health regulations to eliminate hazards; implement programs to reduce the cost of accidents; analyze jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the probability of hazards; design or modify spaces to eliminate hazards; inspect workplaces, processes, or systems for compliance with established safety and occupational policies to identify potential new hazards; train staff, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects; work may be in fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, or occupational health nurse. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.B or J.D. Education must be in a Major study — safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in a related field that included 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have combined specialized experience and completed graduate education directly related to the work of the position. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED. Specialized Experience GS-07: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 for this occupation. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: Work in a developmental capacity with a knowledge of occupational safety and occupational health principles and standards in a medical environment; work to identify and evaluate a variety of environmental risks; a basic knowledge of a physical, chemical or biological field to apply standard safe practices; work in medical facility environment in promoting safe working patterns; developmental knowledge level of building design and construction practices in a medical facility environment to analyze plans for modification; work in facilities to identify and control hazardous construction processes and equipment usage; practical knowledge of industrial hygiene, environmental and safety engineering, and fire protection; or work in hospitals and healthcare related facilities to develop complex emergency management plans; or work managing safety or occupational health program elements in Military environments, firefighting, law enforcement or hazardous material coordinators; or work as a safety officer for Military or civilian agencies; coordinator of aviation and ground safety for field deployment and recovery; or work in emergency response and recovery of downed or stranded aircraft, soldiers, Military equipment and personnel; or work in emergency response contingency planning during severe weather events such as hurricanes, tornados, fires, floods or hazardous material events; or work that demonstrates understanding of safety and occupational health laws and regulations in assistance of modification of workplaces, products, or systems to eliminate hazards; or in fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, or occupational health nurse. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed (1) one full year of graduate level education. Education must be in a Major study — safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have combined specialized experience and equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education directly related to the work of the position. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED. General Experience GS-05: You must have at least three (3) years of general experience, 1 year of which is equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level that would qualify you for the GS-05 grade level. Examples of general experience would typically include but are not limited to: work related to safety and occupational health in a developmental capacity that demonstrated a knowledge of occupational safety principles; work in a medical environment sufficient to identify and evaluate environmental risks; or work that shows a basic knowledge of a physical, chemical or biological field to apply standard safe practices; or work in a medical facility environment to assist in promoting safe working patterns; or developmental level work to analyze plans for modification of facilities; or work to determine the effectiveness of procedures to control hazardous construction and equipment usage; or industrial hygiene, environmental and safety engineering, or fire protection, or knowledge of hospitals and healthcare related organizations; or manage safety or occupational health program elements as in Military environments, firefighting, law enforcement or hazardous material areas; or coordinator of aviation and ground safety for field deployment and recovery; work in emergency response and recovery of downed or stranded aircraft, soldiers, Military equipment and personnel; or work in emergency response contingency planning during severe weather events such as hurricanes, tornados, fires, floods or hazardous material events. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed (4) four full years of education leading to a bachelor’s degree in a Major study — safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in a related field that included study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.
