Effective January 2009, DoDEA changed its business process for rating professional teacher applications. Minimum Academic Preparation and Requirements and Information, to include State endorsements (as DoDEA determines comparable to DoDEA’s teacher categories), official transcripts reflecting 50%, (12/24 or 15/30 semester hours) of the course work in the content area, AND professional teacher education (9/18 semester hours), must be considered with each position, where applicable. Minimum Academic Preparation and Requirements. A baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association is required. Academic preparation of at least 40 semester hours (SH) in general education course work distributed over such fields as English, history, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, languages, science, philosophy, and psychology is required. In addition, a minimum of 18 SH of professional teacher education course work in such areas as learning process, tests and measurement, educational philosophy, psychology, social foundations, methods of teaching and curriculum applicable to the type and level of the position for which applying is required. (Note: Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, School Nurses, School Psychologists, JROTC Instructors, and non-certified Training Instructors are excluded from the minimum academic preparation requirement.) Requirements for 0095 Teacher (Kindergarten):
A major in early childhood education or a degree in elementary education with 24 semester hours in early childhood education is required. The 24 semester hours must be in the course description or title containing early childhood, kindergarten, or pre-kindergarten training. Coursework in methods of teaching emerging literacy and methods of teaching mathematics for early childhood, kindergarten, or pre-kindergarten is required. Two years of full-time experience teaching pre-kindergarten or kindergarten may be substituted for 3 semester hours of the required early childhood education coursework. AND Requirements for 0437 Teacher, English as a Second Language (TESOL), Middle:
A major in ESL or a minimum of 24 semester hours in ESL is required. Course work should include such courses as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, comparative cultures, language development, and social psychology of the bilingual child are required. A minimum of 6 semester hours in the theory and methodology of teaching English as a second language is required.
