Dil toh pagal hai – Udit/Lata – Uttam Singh | Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)

Movie – Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)

The song, Dil toh pagal hai, appears in the Yash-Raj Films’ romrama Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997), directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, etc.

The movie begins with Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) and Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) speaking their minds about the topic of love and life-partner. Pooja believes that God has made someone for her. Rahul disbelieves the whole concept of love and ridicules the idea of the Godsend companion for life. A song is heard in the background, which expresses Pooja’s thoughts.

Post the above song, the next shot itself has another song, performed by Nisha (Karishma Kapoor) with other girls. At the end of this song, Rahul appears and announces a new play, Maya. But when the other troupe members question him about the new play, he says that right then Maya was a concept. When the others insist, Rahul puts his thoughts to words in a song. But, Nisha is not convinced that such a girl could be found on the earth.

On Valentine’s Day, Pooja believes that she would meet her soulmate before the end of the day. On the other hand, Rahul does not believe in anything close to someone being another’s Valentine. He tries to convince Nisha about it. They are at Valentine’s Day party. He also says that the couples dancing together today would split within a few days and would be seen with another person the next year. Unexpectedly, he drops a question – would she live with him for the rest of their lives. But before she replies in the affirmative, he is asked to sing a song.

Pooja is an orphan and lives with her childhood friend Ajay’s (Akshay Kumar) parents, who were her family friends. Ajay lives in London and visits his parents’ home for a few days. At that time, he takes Pooja to Germany for an official-cum-shopping trip. During the trip, they sing this song on one hand. On the other, Nisha and Rahul also sing the same song.

Song – Dil toh pagal hai

The song, Dil toh pagal hai, was penned by Anand Bakshi and set to tune by Uttam Singh.

The song informs, “The heart is crazy. It is besotted.”

Video – Dil toh pagal hai

The cinematography is by Manmohan Singh. Dance choreography is by Shiamak Davar.

The video opens with a day-to-day scene in Germany. 3 girls prance across a street and Akshay Kumar flirts with them. Madhuri Dixit, who was with him and has moved to the other side of the road, goes back to him to pull him by his collar toward the other side of the road.

The music and chorus have already begun. Akshay Kumar also begins to sing. The 2 Indian actors begin to dance with some actors wearing children’s book character getups. Madhuri Dixit also begins to sing.

They change to different dresses and visit different places of tourist attraction. There is a change of place and here Shah Rukh Khan and Karishma Kapoor appear. She begins to sing the song as he is seen fishing in the wilderness. Shah Rukh Khan also begins to sing the song.

We are back at a restaurant where Akshay Kumar brings tea for himself and Madhuri Dixit. She continues to sing the song. They return to India and dress up Deven Verma and Farida Jalal, who play Akshay Kumar’s parents in this movie, in the clothes bought during the trip for them.

It’s time for Akshay Kumar to return to London and Madhuri Dixit goes to the airport to drop him. The song has already ended and the video also ends abruptly at this point in the movie. This is one of a few songs, in my opinion, where Lata Mangeshkar sounds happy.

Udit Narayan sings this song for Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan and Lata Mangeshkar for Madhuri Dixit and Karishma Kapoor. Some other actors are also seen in the video.

Cultural Influence

This song is a typical young generation number, which may be liked by older people as well. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
