Ramesh (Farooq Sheikh), the son of a devout widower Kailashpati (Utpal Dutt), and Dr. Ramola (Deepti Naval) are in love with each other. Having ‘seen’ several modern educated girls, Kailashpati decides that he wants only a village girl, who knows about the Indian Culture but not a single word of English.

Ramesh requests the help of his father’s friend, Lalaji (Saeed Jaffrey), who presents Ramola as a village belle Rama. Lalaji also shares a list of questions for her to learn by rote just in case Kailashpati would ask them. Ramola ‘Rama’ manages to get into Kailashpati’s good books and Ramola gets to marry Ramesh. After the wedding, every step of the way Ramola feels guilty that she is cheating a good man.

One day, Kailashpati tells Ramesh to take Ramola to ‘her’ village. Ramola fears that they would have to go to the remote village, again. But, Ramesh cajoles her into getting down at a station before the village and stay at a good hotel. The couple gets down at a station and Ramesh decides to stay at Honey Moon Hotel, which has been rechristened as Hanuman Hotel! The hotel owner (Yunus Pervez) gets suspicious of the couple since Ramesh gives a different name to be written on the register and also carelessly asks him to pass on the message to Lalaji that they are in this hotel, giving their real names. The hotel owner does not call Lalaji. He calls the police, instead. Blissfully ignorant of the twist of fate, the couple goes out on a trip and Ramola sings this song at this point in the movie.
