Movie – Fakira (1976)
The song, Hum toh jhukkar salaam karte hain, was featured in the sociodrama Fakira (1976), produced by N N Sippy and directed by C P Dixit. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Danny Dengzongpa, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, etc.
After losing their parents to arson performed by criminals, 2 boys get separated and grow up to become thieves and criminals. Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) is Fakira, a conscientious one at that and Ajay (Danny Dengzongpa) grows up to be Toofan. Fakira aka Vijay always steals from Chimanlal (Madan Puri), who is a covert smuggler, leading the life of a social activist. Chimanlal pits Toofan against Fakira. Toofan reaches a hotel in search of Fakira where Vijay’s colleague Neelam (Aruna Irani) is performing a song.
Post the song, Toofan asks Vijay for a lift because he knows that Vijay is Fakira. Vijay gives Toofan the slip. But, fate has different designs on Vijay. Neeta (Shabana Azmi) is a policewoman and disguises herself as a damsel-in-distress to catch Fakira. But, Vijay falls in love with her and she plays along. But, Neelam is suspicious of Neeta and the former sees the other girl coming out of the police headquarters one day.
Neelam is in love with Vijay and tries to convince him that he in turn is in love with a police agent. Vijay takes Neeta to a temple and applies vermillion on the parting of her hair, without her consent. This act symbolizes the marriage between the persons involved. Neeta is filled with remorse and tells him that he should not have done what he just did. Vijay explains to her that with their marriage, the police would not be able to kill him because he is a police officer’s husband.
On the night of their nuptials, Vijay is caught by the police. Neeta visits her father the commissioner of police (Iftekhar) to confront him about the arrest of Vijay. Neeta’s father holds her on house arrest. It turns out that Vijay had been caught by Toofan and Chimanlal’s men, disguised as policemen, Neelam being the whistle-blower. However, Vijay tries to escape from there and is thrown into the sea with a cement block tied to his legs but not before dropping his wallet, which has his childhood picture with Ajay, in Chimanlal’s house. Toofan picks it up and brings it to the man, who had taken care of him since his childhood. On seeing the childhood picture, Toofan recognizes himself as one of the kids and the man tells Toofan that the other boy is his brother.
Stricken with remorse, Toofan aka Ajay hurries back to the rocky beach to help Vijay’s friend Popat (Asrani) fetch Vijay from the sea. Vijay is a practitioner of yoga and can hold his breath for up to 30 minutes. After being rescued, Vijay reaches Neeta’s home and they get intimate. The next day, Ajay and Popat come looking for Vijay, with Ajay singing their family song – Suraj chanda tare jugnu... Vijay leaves saying something important must have come up hence Popat and Ajay had come looking for him.
Fakira continues to dupe Chimanlal. But now, he has with him Toofan. Chimanlal is frustrated with the whole thing. It appears that he hasn’t realized how Fakira was saved and that the latter has joined hands with Toofan. One day, Chimanlal’s secretary (Mukri) suggests that the charitable organization that Chimanlal works for should felicitate the social activist by gifting him a diamond studded golden cake on his 50th birthday. This was intended to be a trap for Fakira, who bites the bait. Vijay, Ajay and Popat join in the celebrations as Qawwali singers. The police also attend the event as Qawwali singers. Chimanlal’s secretary also auctions off the clothes that his boss is wearing on the occasion. Eventually, the birthday boy is wearing only his underwear. One of his other employees (Ramesh Deo) puts a shawl around the half-naked man. This is the song they sing on the occasion.

Video – Hum toh jhukkar salaam karte hain
The cinematography is by Fali Mistry. Dance choreography is by Satyanarayan.
The video opens with the shot of the gold cake. The camera backs off to encompass the people present at the event. The birthday boy Madan Puri is sitting with a shawl around him. Shashi Kapoor begins to sing the song sitting on top of Danny Dengzongpa.
Danny Dengzongpa is in turn sitting on the shoulder of Asrani. Both also join Shashi Kapoor in the song. Shashi Kapoor also begins to dance. Iftekhar and Asit Sen recognize Shashi Kapoor as Fakira and join in singing the song. Asrani moves toward the gold cake to scrutinize it.
Asit Sen also approaches it to make sure Asrani does not do anything to it. Mukri disperses the other 2, who are near the cake. Madan Puri also sings a part of the sargam. Danny Dengzongpa and Asrani play shehnai in the ears of Madan Puri.
Shashi Kapoor also approaches the birthday boy trying to pull off his shawl. Shashi Kapoor winks and a large magnet is lowered on the closed casket with the gold cake. Asrani switches off the lights at that point. The song and video end abruptly right then.
The song has been sung by Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Aziz Nazan for Shashi Kapoor and Danny Dengzongpa, Asrani, Iftekhar, Asit Sen, Mukri and Madan Puri. Other actors are also seen in the video. The vocals are so messed up that we don’t know who is singing for whom.
This is a typical romantic song sung by the hero, with a lot of Sufi touch to it. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
