Qualification Summary
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GEOGRAPHER 0150: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer, all grade levels.
A. Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. B. A combination of education and experience– courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in “A” above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR PHYSICAL SCIENTIST 1301: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. B. A combination of education and experience–education equivalent to one of the majors shown in “A” above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. For GS-11: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level: **Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in physical science or other directly related field of study or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. in physical science or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled. **OR Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: 1) performing earth science research and analysis related to changes to the landscape due to human intervention, land characterization of the natural environment, environmental studies, or natural resources assessment applying digital spatial data products; 2) Assessing requirements of geographic information science by analyzing data structures, formats, and computer input, graphic and other output to determine the applicability of the various formats, layouts, and computer processes for spatial data handling in order to design better strategies for using the technology to support research efforts; 3) Processing, editing, integrating, and manipulating spatial data for the purpose of identifying, interpreting, analyzing, and correlating natural earth surface and human­ induced processes. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. At this level, had the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work. **OR Possess a combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above. For GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: **Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: perform research involving geographic data analyses, environmental studies, spatial data editing and processing techniques, and the development of demonstration or research projects to meet programmatic requirements and the unique needs of the spatial data user community. Evaluate new software, spatial data structures, and formats. Perform applied research and develop demonstration projects to test new techniques for analyzing, processing, and displaying spatial data. Examples required a high degree of independence in planning and carrying out the assignments, selecting the approach or methodology to be used, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, and coordinating the work with others as necessary. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
