Movie – Fakira (1976)
The song, Dil mein tujhe bithake, was featured in the sociodrama Fakira (1976), produced by N N Sippy and directed by C P Dixit. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Danny Dengzongpa, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, etc.
After losing their parents to arson performed by criminals, 2 boys get separated and grow up to become thieves and criminals. Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) is Fakira, a conscientious one at that and Ajay (Danny Dengzongpa) grows up to be Toofan. Fakira aka Vijay always steals from Chiman Lal (Madan Puri), who is a covert smuggler, leading the life of a social activist. Chiman Lal pits Toofan against Fakira. Toofan reaches a hotel in search of Fakira where Vijay’s colleague Neelam (Aruna Irani) is performing a song.
Post the song, Toofan asks Vijay for a lift because he knows that Vijay is Fakira. Vijay gives Toofan the slip. But, fate has different designs on Vijay. Neeta (Shabana Azmi) is a policewoman and disguises as a damsel-in-distress to catch Fakira. But, Vijay falls in love with her and she plays along. But, Neelam is suspicious of Neeta and the former sees the other girl coming out of the police headquarters one day.
Neelam is in love with Vijay and tries to convince him that he in turn is in love with a police agent. Vijay takes Neeta to a temple and applies vermillion on the parting of her hair, without her consent. This act symbolizes the marriage between the persons involved. Neeta is filled with remorse and tells him that he should not have done what he just did. Vijay explains to her that with their marriage, the police would not be able to kill him because he is a police officer’s husband.
On the night of their nuptials, Vijay is caught by the police. Neeta visits her father the commissioner of police (Iftekhar) to confront him about the arrest of Vijay. Neeta’s father holds her on house arrest. It turns out that Vijay had been caught by Toofan and Chiman Lal’s men, disguised as policemen, Neelam being the whistle-blower. However, Vijay tries to escape from there and is thrown into the sea with a cement block tied to his legs but not before dropping his wallet, which has his childhood picture with Ajay, in Chiman Lal’s house. Toofan picks it up and brings it to the man, who had taken care of him since his childhood. On seeing the childhood picture, Toofan recognizes himself as one of the kids and the man tells Toofan that the other boy was his brother.
Stricken with remorse, Toofan aka Ajay hurries back to the rocky beach to help Vijay’s friend Popat (Asrani) to fetch Vijay from the sea. Vijay is a practitioner of yoga and can hold his breath for up to 30 minutes. After being rescued, Vijay reaches Neeta’s home and is almost hit by her, thinking him to be a thief. Neeta’s father comes to her room and Vijay hides behind the older actor, not to get caught. Neeta sings this song at this point in the movie.
Song – Dil mein tujhe bithake
Both lyrics and music of the song, Dil mein tujhe bithake, were composed by Ravindra Jain.
The girl tells the man, “I will place you in my heart and close my eyes. Then, I will worship you.”
Video – Dil mein tujhe bithake
The cinematography is by Fali Mistry.
The video opens with Shashi Kapoor looking out of Shabana Azmi’s room, stealthily, to make sure nobody has come to disturb them. They hug and she begins to sing this song. Achla Sachdev and Iftekhar are woken up due to the song.
Iftekhar tells Achla Sachdev to go back to sleep since Shabana Azmi must be hungry and probably be singing the song because of that. The song peters out and the video ends as young couple gets intimate.
The song has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar for Shabana Azmi. Shashi Kapoor, Achla Sachdev and Iftekhar are also seen in the video.
This is a typical romantic song sung by the heroine. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
