Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. GS-05 Grade Level:
Specialized experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience performing firefighting functions and 2) Experience performing regular maintenance and minor repairs on fire equipment. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below: Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: Successful completion of a four-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide you total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your undergraduate semester hours by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-06 Grade Level:
Specialized experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: (1) Experience controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Experience with rescue operations; (3) Experience in detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and 4) Experience assessing patient’s conditions to administer basic treatment. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-06 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone–no substitution of education for experience is permitted. GS-07 Grade Level:
Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience controlling or extinguishing fires performing rescue operations; (2) Experience operating fire communications equipment; (3) Experience controlling hazardous materials incidents; and (4) Experience developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-06 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone–no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

NOTE: To support the Advancement requirement you MUST submit a copy of your latest non-award SF-50/NPA that reflects your highest grade held on a permanent basis along with your application/resume package. Failure to do so may affect your rating or consideration for employment. Time in Grade Requirement for GS-06 Grade Level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05). Time in Grade Requirement for GS-07 Grade Level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
