Qualification Summary
Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: Have 90 days of prior smokejumping experience. Candidates must possess a minimum of 90-days of wildland firefighting experience, gained through fire line work in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. You must clearly demonstrate this experience in your resume, including the months, days and hours per week at which the work was performed in order to be considered. Have a FAA Master or Senior Parachute Rigger with back and chest ratings Specialized Experience: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements – please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-10: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience of forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service to qualify for the GS-10. This experience includes: (1) participating in smokejumper operations as an active smokejumper; and (2) recommending improvement ideas to internal guidelines and operating procedures. -OR- Education: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., in fire management or related major. – OR- Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education, as described above. To compute this, first determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement and then determine your experience as a percentage of the experience requirement; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100% to qualify. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years may be combined with experience. NOTE: You must provide copies of your official or unofficial college transcripts. GS-11: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience of forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal Service to qualify for the GS-11. This experience includes: (1) managing and participating in smokejumper operations as an active smokejumper and (2) overseeing working assignments to be accomplished by subordinates. -OR- Education: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., in fire management or related major. – OR- Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education, as described above. To compute this, first determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement and then determine your experience as a percentage of the experience requirement; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100% to qualify. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years may be combined with experience. NOTE: You must provide copies of your official or unofficial college transcripts. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level. This is a SECONDARY/Administrative fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure this office has enough information to determine your retirement status to ensure you do not lose benefits(normally through submission of your SF-50). YOU MUST LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN A PRIMARY POSITION. Physical Demands: The incumbent must be able to work under extreme physical exertion regularly working 16 hour shifts or longer on the fireline. Work on the fireline requires considerable strenuous physical exertion. Work Environment: The majority of work is performed outdoors in a wide variety of weather and terrain conditions or in a crowded airplane.
