Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Consumer Safety Officer: A. Degree: A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in quality assurance or a related degree that included at least 30 semester hours in one or a combination of the following: consumer laws, biological sciences,food science, chemistry, pharmacy, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science,engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, legal investigations, law enforcement, or related scientific fields that provided knowledge directly related to consumer safety officer work.The 30 semester hours may include up to 8 semester hours in statistics, or course work that included the principles, theory, or practical application of computers or computer programming. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: courses consisting of at least 30 semester hours in the fields of study described in paragraph A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning and executing sanitary audits of commercial food establishments; conducting commercial sanitary auditor training; and reviewing technical inspection reports of food establishments for accuracy, correctness, and completeness. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Quality Assurance, Food Science, Food Technology, or Veterinary Medical Science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Selective Placement Factor. You must meet one of the requirements below to perform the work of a Consumer Safety Officer. A. Former U.S. Army Veterinary Corps Officer (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Food Safety Warrant Officer). (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your DD Form 214, member copy 4 for verification). OR B. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and did not serve as a former U.S. Army Veterinary Corps Officer, but are food protection audit certified. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your college transcript and food protection audit certification for verification). OR C. Current Veterinary Service Department of the Army civilian employee and not a former Veterinary Corps Officer, but was hired prior to 9 October 2013. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your SF-50, Notification of Personnel Action, for verification of appointment prior to 9 October 2013).
