The song, Rang birangi rakhi leke aayi behna, was featured in Kiron Productions’ Mohan Segal and Rajendra Bhatia produced and Mohan Kumar directed Anpadh (1963). The movie starred Mala Sinha, Balraj Sahni, Dharmendra, Nazir Hussain, Shashikala, Bindu, etc.

Shabhunath (Balraj Sahni) thinks that money is more important than education. Thus, when his sister Lajwanti (Mala Sinha) plays truant in school, he supports her and stops her education. She sings this song during Raksha Bandhan.

The song, Rang birangi rakhi leke aayi behna, has been written by Raja Mehendi Ali Khan and its music was composed by Madan Mohan.

The girl brings colorful a rakhi for her brother and requests him to let her tie it on his wrist.

The video opens with a little girl tying rakhi to her brother and some girls dancing with plates filled with auspicious stuff. Mala Sinha runs out of the temple and begins to sing and perform this song. Balraj Sahni, Shashikala and others are watching the performance.

Sometime later, she approaches Balraj Sahni and ties the rakhi she has for him on her plate. He hands over a currency note to her. After performing a few steps, she places a piece of laddoo into his mouth. Soon, the song peters out and the video ends as all of them stop dancing.


Lata Mangeshkar has sung this song for Mala Sinha. Balraj Sahni, Shashikala and others look on.

Cultural Influence

Raksha Bandhan festival is a very important part of the North Indian culture. It signifies the bond shared by a brother and a sister. The song and the artists are good and the video is watchable for the same.
