Qualification Summary
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 or equivalent level that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician (Radiology). Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Support duties to medical or health personnel such as radiologists, x-ray technicians or radiologic technologists that required application of the knowledge, methods and techniques of the position to be filled. NOTE: Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must successfully completed two (2) years of study that include at least 12 semester hours in subjects where it is directly related to the work of a Health Technician (Radiology). NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted, and education must be from an accredited college or university. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and two (2) years of study that include 12 semester hours in subjects where it is directly related to work as a Health Technician. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Knowledge Required by the Position: Knowledge of sterile techniques and how to maintain sterile field and recognize when sterile field is broken. Knowledge of digital x-ray equipment. Knowledge of radiation protection standards including basic radiation sensitive areas of the body and to use all protective devices and methods. Knowledge to respond to the needs of the patient, the incumbent must be cognizant of the condition of the patient and observe any signs or symptoms to ensure that a physician or technologist is summoned should an emergency arise. Incumbent must have sufficient knowledge of anatomy and all of the different views required for each x-ray examination to be able to sort and prepare films for reporting by the radiologist. Knowledge of office automation equipment and software to prepare documents using word processing software, database and spreadsheets to enter, maintain, and retrieve patient records/data. Incumbent must be able to communicate directly or by telephone with all of the various ward clerks, nurses and physicians and take notes when called to ensure films are routed to the correct ward, clinic or physicians. Knowledge of the proper procedure of transferring patient to prevent injury to self and patient. Employee is able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and gender of the patients served in his assigned area. Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in the service’s policies and procedures. Incumbent has enough understanding of medical terms and their meaning to be able to carry out assigned tasks. The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient. Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Work Environment: Work is performed in the professional atmosphere of the Imaging Service, in a large and active university oriented teaching hospital. There is ionizing radiation present; therefore, special precautions are necessary for the radiation protection to the patients and employees. Due to nature of the position, incumbent is subjected to ionizing radiation more than most of the other employees, including x-ray technologists. From time to time, patients who are infected with virulent organisms are encountered. Protective measures must be employed to
reduce chance of infections. Clerical work is performed in an office setting with interaction with staff and visitors. This involves everyday risk and discomforts of office work.
