Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Alabama Army National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the Alabama Army National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. Military Requirements: Military skill set is determined by MOS requirements. Upon selection, individuals must be assigned to a compatible military MOS in accordance with statutes and National Guard Bureau regulations and must obtain/maintain all requirements of the MOS. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Each applicant must fully substantiate (in his/her own words) that he/she meets the requirements of the Specialized Experience listed below: Otherwise, the applicant will be considered unqualified for this position. DO NOT COPY THE VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT OR THE POSITION DESCRIPTION GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to take measurements, make patterns and layouts, mark, cut, fit, and sew or cement parts together, using hand or power tools and equipment and knowledge or fabrics and constructions methods. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess at least 18 months experience in each of the following tasks: Experience or training reading and interpreting designs and blueprints, technical manuals, and prints, and drawing individual patterns, making alterations or adjustments to difficult patterns. Experience computing dimensions, lay out circles, angles, curves and irregular shapes. Experience applying mathematical principles such those used in the calculation and measurement of fabric. Experience operating, repairing, and maintaining sewing machines, punch presses and other related equipment. Experience using a variety of hand and power tools and measuring devices such as flexible measuring tapes, straight and curves rules, protractors, compasses, dividers, squares, patterns and templates. SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:
— Ability to construct and repair articles that are difficult to plan, lay out, and fit because of irregular configurations, uncommon shapes and sizes, and detailed specifications and measurements are not available.
— Ability to make complicated cutting layouts that involve many pattern pieces, different types of fabrics or materials, etc. Ability to draw patterns or alter standard patterns to fit special measurements and special design features.
— Ability to make working sketches containing data on dimensions, location and size of openings, and position of design details such as pleats or pockets.
— Knowledge of shop mathematics, including fractions, equations, and plane measurements to make difficult calculations, such as computing dimensions and laying out circles, angles, curves, and irregular shapes.
— Skill in operating regular and heavy-duty sewing machines to sew, seal seams or fabric edges, join sections of material, or apply patches. Ability to use scissors, shears, knives, and shivers to cut materials.
— Ability to work with a wide variety of fabrics including newly developed materials. Skill in using plastic bead welders to vulcanize plastic or synthetic materials.
— Ability to design and fabricate covers for various combat, tactical, and commercial equipment and vehicles.
— Ability to redesign vehicle seat patterns to reduce wear, as required.
— Knowledge of standard techniques to pad and cover items that have relatively straight lines and regular surfaces is required.
— Ability to examine upholstery and locate damaged areas and parts. Ability to repair tears, cuts, burns on damaged upholstery. Sews tears, rips, and cuts with needle and thread and/or removes and replaces damaged parts.
