Kinna sona des hai mera – Gurudas/Udit/Lata/Pritha – Madan Mohan/Sanjeev Kohli | Veer-Zara (2004)

Movie – Veer-Zara (2004)

Kinna sona des hai mera appeared in the Yash-Raj Films’ romrama Veer-Zara (2004), directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, etc.

The government of Pakistan decides to take up cases of Indian prisoners that had not been previously solved; as a gesture of goodwill. An aspiring Pakistani Lawyer Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukherji)’s first case is that of a prisoner, who had not spoken to anyone for the last 22 years. This prisoner, whose number is 786, had been holding a light anklet in his hand. Saamiya has to convince him to open up.

On hearing his name, Veer Pratap Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), the man opens up to reveal that he was an Indian Air Force officer and was about to fall in love with Zaara. But, in the beginning of the narrative, Lahorite Zaara or Zaara Hayaat Khan (Preity Zinta) is blissfully ignorant of what was to happen to her. She is sleeping in her room and her maid Shabbo (Divya Dutta) is trying to wake her up.

Zaara is a carefree, independent and lively young Pakistani girl, belonging to a politically-inclined family. Shabbo tells her that someone had liked her for marriage only on the basis of her looks. She also tells Zaara that she would have to change herself for her husband and in-laws. But, the happy-go-lucky Zaara has a mind of her own.

Soon, her life turns haywire when her governess Bebe (Zohra Sehgal) expires and she takes off to India to fulfill the older woman’s last wish. But as fate could have it, Zaara’s bus gets involved in an accident and Veer has to rescue her. While he rescues her, he seems to get attracted to her. But, I wonder how that happens because there is too much kohl on her eyes making them gaudy.

After an overnight stay in a dhaba (without any issues because all men are good in India!?!), Zaara tries to get into a bus to take her to Satluj river to immerse her Bebe’s ashes. Though Veer is supposed to take another bus, he joins her as she is sent to the roof and becomes her self-appointed bodyguard. An elderly Punjabi man begins to sing this song and Shah Rukh Khan joins in.

Song – Kinna sona des hai mera

The song extols the singer’s country, highly.

Video – Kinna sona des hai mera

Cinematography is by Anil Mehta.

The video opens with the unknown actor beginning the song. Shah Rukh Khan stands up to take up the song. Next, it begins to rain and the lead pair is shown traveling on a bullock cart covering themselves with a tarpaulin sheet.

Shah Rukh Khan is eating sugarcane and he gives one stick to Preity Zinta, as well. The shots now show the scenic beauty of Punjab. Then, they travel on a horse-cart, carrying vegetables. In the next shot, some actors are performing Bhangra in a fair.

One of the dancers is Gurdas Maan, who also sings part of the song. Shah Rukh Khan joins him in the dance and he is lifted off the ground by Gurdas Maan. In the next shot, the lead pair moves about the fair and also takes some amusement rides.

The lead pair travels on a tractor having some haystacks. Preity Zinta plays with some Punjabi girls swinging on homemade swings. Preity Zinta says that her country is similar to his. The song peters out and the video ends as they travel forward on a tractor.

Gurdas Mann, Udit Narayan, Lata Mangeshkar and Pritha Majumdar take up the playback. Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta perform the song with some other actors.

Cultural Influence

I think there is a lot of influence of Punjabi culture on this song. The music has been inspired by Yeh desh hai veer jawanonka… from Naya Daur (1957). The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
