Qualification Summary
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical and health personnel. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the above experience: Collects, and processes required blood specimens from hospitalized bed patients, ambulatory patients and outpatients. Performs venipunctures associated with tolerance tests, time tests, “stat” tests, and routine requests. Operates complex instrumentation in Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Microbiology and Blood Bank. Interprets complex reports, cellular characteristics, and identifies abnormal smears and results. Troubleshoots complex, and highly technical instrumentation. Rotates and performs various complex testing procedures through a clinical laboratory. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction and can locate and implement corrective action. Maintains lab facilities, equipment, and reagent/chemical inventories. Follows Lab safety and CAP regulatory requirements. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of one (1) year of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Equivalent combination of successfully completed specialized experience and graduate level education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify at the GS-7 level Transcripts must be submitted with application. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
