Widow Savitri Choudhury (Nirupa Roy) is wealthy but not healthy. Continuously ill, several people including her playboy and wayward son Anil (Vinod Khanna) wants her to die. Savitri stops his pocket money and he is advised by his assistant to find a good girl to introduce to her as his fiancé. Due to some developments, Deepali (Asha Parekh) comes to his rescue. For Deepali, this is a thrilling experience on which she sets out. Slowly, she realizes that Anil is not what he appears to be and is a very wicked person.

On the other hand, Deepali meets Ajit (Rajesh Khanna) in the village, who is kindness personified. She appears to be impressed by Ajit and so is he. After a few meetings, she realizes that he is the epitome of virtue, as well. She also tells him that she is Varsha and not Deepali and she is not engaged to Anil. Soon, she convinces him to accept her love. In the meantime, Anil is pulling a helpless Varsha into a quagmire of deception and nobody can help her out of it. Ajit tells her that they should meet the situation head-on. He also tells her to just wait and watch.

Soon, Varsha’s father and Ajit’s mother (Dulari) meet to finalize the young people’s marriage alliance. Some incidents of the past return to the 2 seniors haunting them and Savitri has blood in her hands. She is depressed from inside about it. But, with some help from her side, Varsha and Ajit are betrothed to each other. Ajit and his mother are invited to Savitri’s villa for some reason. When they reach there, it turns out to be Varsha’s birthday. Since Ajit and his mother do not know why they had been invited, they do not have a gift for the birthday girl. Muftram Mauji (Rajindernath), Savitri’s cousin Mehengaram Mauji’s (Sunder) son plays the blind man’s buff and points at Ajit and insists that he sing a song on this day.
