Movie – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
This song, Mehendi lagake rakhna, was featured in Yash-Raj Films’ super-duper hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), produced by Yash Chopra and directed by the debutante Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, etc.
Londoner Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) yearns to return to his native place Punjab. He lives with his wife Lajwanti or Lajjo (Farida Jalal) and daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chutki (Pooja Ruparel). Simran is a budding poet and fantasizes about a boy. Lajjo tells her daughter that dreams are dreams – they cannot come true.
One day, Punjab (India) resident Ajit (Satish Shah) sends a letter to Baldev, reminding him about a promise that they made to each other 20 years ago, i.e. to get Simran married to Ajit’s son Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi). Simran is disappointed that she would have to marry someone, she has not even met.
Meanwhile, one night, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) misbehaves with Baldev, in the latter’s shop at closing time and makes away with a box of beer, throwing the money at him. Baldev is furious and brands Raj a disgrace to India.
Raj and Simran’s friends decide to go on a trip across Europe, independent of each other. Raj’s father allows him to go on the tour. With a lot of difficulties, Simran convinces her strict father to allow her to go with her friends on the vacation. Consequently, Raj and Simran meet on the trip. He continuously flirts with her, which, initially, irritates her. But soon, they fall in love with each other but do not confess and go their own ways.
Back home, Raj decides to find her. He and his father (Anupam Kher) travel to Punjab, India and reach the village. Raj locates Kuljit while he is hunting and tricks him to believe that he has saved his life. Kuljit becomes Raj’s close buddy and brings him home. Raj tries to get into the good books of Simran’s entire family. But, Baldev turns out to be the toughest nut to crack because he remembers how Raj behaved with him in London. So many things are happening between the lead pair, so openly and only Chutki realizes it. That’s so ridiculous!
On Simran’s engagement day, she pretends to have injured her left ring finger and the ritual is completed with the right ring finger. Raj appreciates her ingenuity in bypassing the ritual. During the sangeet ceremony on that day, Raj and Simran sing this song.
Song – Mehendi lagake rakhna
Anand Bakshi and Jatin-Lalit penned the lyrics and composed the tune Mehendi lagake rakhna, respectively.
The man requests the girl to be ready as a bride since he would be coming to take her away.
Video – Mehendi lagake rakhna
The cinematography is by Manmohan Singh. Saroj Khan-Farah Khan is credited with the dance choreography.
The video begins with Kajol being readied for the sangeet ritual. Parmeet Sethi and his friends sit opposite her. Some men and girls, including Mandira Bedi, begin to sing and dance. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol join them. Pooja Ruparel is at the dholak.
It is so obvious that the lead pair is talking to each other. But, no one realizes it! Shah Rukh Khan plays the mandolin, which attracts Kajol to him again. He acts as if he means to attract Mandira Bedi.
Kajol requests him to stop revealing his intentions anymore and he falls silent. Farida Jalal comes along that way and the young people pull her into the ceremony and make her dance. Himani Shivpuri is with her.
Shah Rukh Khan picks up someone’s dupatta and begins to dance with the senior ladies. The song abruptly ends as he perceives Amrish Puri. The senior actor is not very pleased with the turn of events. The video ends there.
Udit Narayan and Lata Mangeshkar have sung Mehendi lagake rakhna for Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
There is a lot of influence of the North Indian culture on this song. The Bhangra is worth writing home about. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
