Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana Sanam – Sanu/Lata – Jatin-Lalit – Kajol/Shah Rukh | Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)

Movie – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)

This song, Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana Sanam, was featured in Yash-Raj Films’ super-duper hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), produced by Yash Chopra and directed by the debutante Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, etc.

Londoner Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) yearns to return to his native place Punjab. He lives with his wife Lajwanti or Lajjo (Farida Jalal) and daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chutki (Pooja Ruparel). Simran is a budding poet and fantasizes about a boy. Lajjo tells her daughter that dreams are dreams – they cannot come true.

One day, Punjab (India) resident Ajit (Satish Shah) sends a letter to Baldev, reminding him about a promise that they made to each other 20 years ago, i.e. to get Simran married to Ajit’s son Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi). Simran is disappointed that she would have to marry someone, she has not even met.

Meanwhile, one night, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) misbehaves with Baldev, in the latter’s shop at closing time and makes away with a box of beer, throwing the money at him. Baldev is furious and brands Raj a disgrace to India.

Raj and Simran’s friends decide to go on a trip across Europe, independent of each other. Raj’s father allows him to go on the tour. With some difficulty, Simran convinces her strict father to allow her to go with her friends on the vacation. Consequently, Raj and Simran meet on the trip. He continuously flirts with her, which, initially, irritates her. But soon, they fall in love with each other but do not confess and go their own ways.

Back home, Raj decides to find her. He and his father (Anupam Kher) travel to Punjab, India and reach the village. Raj plays his patent tune on his mandolin and attracts Simran, who runs to find him. He sings this song at this point.

Song – Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana Sanam

Anand Bakshiand Jatin-Lalit penned the lyrics and composed the tune Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana Sanam, respectively.

The man and the girl confess that they are in love with each other.

Video – Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana Sanam

The cinematography is by Manmohan Singh. Saroj Khan-Farah Khan is credited with the dance choreography.

The video begins with Kajol standing in a field where a cow is grazing. The song has begun in the background. Somebody has decorated the cow with a showpiece (which Kajol had bought during the Europe trip and left it hanging on the door of her house in London for Shah Rukh to see).

Kajol perceives Shah Rukh Khan some distance away in the field and runs into his open arms. The shots of the yellow mustard flowers in the field are dramatic. She moves away from him. He begins to sing. She joins him in the song. The next few shots are dream sequences.

He is walking into a church with Kajol lifted in his arms. Kajol is wearing a traditional North Indian bridal dress. They imagine how they would travel on a European train together and how they would perform everyday activities post marriage.

In almost all these places, now Kajol is wearing salwar suits and saris. During the song, Zarasa jhoom loon main, she was made to show her underwear. I guess, once you get committed in love and get married, the days of showing the underwear gets over!

Back to reality, both are sitting in the field together. The song peters out and the video ends as Kajol opens her eyes.

Kumar Sanu and Lata Mangeshkar have sung Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana Sanam for Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Cultural Influence

There is no cultural influence on this song. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
