Movie – Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966)
Mere dushman appeared in the Filmyug’s hit romrama Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966), directed by Raghunath Jhalani and produced by J Om Prakash. The movie starred Asha Parekh, Dharmendra, Sulochana, Balraj Sahni, Rajinder Nath, etc.
Ravi (Dharmendra) is a college’s senior student and is on the lookout for private tuitions to help his poor mother Yamuna (Sulochana) in running the house. One day, he meets a junior student Kanchan (Asha Parekh) and his prank upsets her. Post the exchange of a couple of pranks, they fall in love with each other. Their parents also agree to get them married. However, circumstances reveal that Yamuna was an unwed mother and the engagement is called off. Ravi gets upset and leaves his mother alone.
Soon, he is found by Justice Shukla (Balraj Sahni). That the judge is his father is not known by Ravi. But, the older man realizes the same at the first meeting. The judge takes Ravi back to his home and they receive the news that Yamuna drowned in the river the moment he left her. However, the family is, soon, reunited.
But, Ravi thinks Kanchan has married someone else. At the same time, Kanchan has come to the same city as Ravi and is being taken care of by the nurse Rachna (Nazima). Kanchan joins Nazima’s hospital as a nurse. Ravi’s parents try to convince him to get married to someone else since Kanchan had married someone else. Rachna is assigned the task of taking care of an ill Yamuna. Ravi mistakes Rachna to be the girl, who had come to see him for marriage and tries to convince her against it. Rachna falls in love with him and the complication begins.
Rachna informs her friend Kanchan that she is in love with Ravi. Rachna tries to set up a meeting between Kanchan and Ravi, without knowing their past. Ravi’s parents decide to marry their son to Rachna. During the engagement, Kanchan gets to know that her beloved is getting married to her best friend. She acts as if she has got married and has a baby. Ravi sings this song at that time.
Song – Mere dushman
The song Mere dushman was penned by Anand Bakshi and the tune was composed by Lakshmi-Pyare.
The man sings, “My enemy, you will yearn for my friendship.”
Video – Mere dushman
Director of Photography is V Babasaheb. Dance choreography is by Suresh Bhatt-Satyanarayan.
The video opens with Dharmendra beginning to sing the song. He is accusing Asha Parekh of ditching him. This song is being sung during Nazima and Dharmendra’s engagement party. There is no place for such a song during an engagement party.
But, I am shocked that the words of the song do not affect Nazima, in any way, at the beginning of the song. Anyone would understand that something is wrong. Nazima convinces 2 similarly costumed girls to dance.
Asha Parekh hurries to return the baby she had with her to its father and stands nearby. She backs off to a parapet wall and begins to cry. Nazima begins to see into the words, which are becoming more and more venomous.
Asha Parekh slips out of the place and Nazima realizes that the other female actor has left. Nazima comes forward to tell Dharmendra about Asha Parekh. But, the applause after the end of the song stops her. The video ends there.
The playback of Mere dushman was sung by Mohammad Rafi for Dharmendra. Asha Parekh, Nazima and others are looking on. Other female dancers are also present performing the song.
There is not much cultural influence on this typically filmi song. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
