Post the use of the wheels in Mesopotamia for pottery and their later conversion to the use for transportation besides other uses, several technological developments later a whole industry is now based on these revolving pieces of rubber. One of the developments in the public transportation sector is the bus and it is seen the world over wherever there are motor-able roads. Like everything else, buses have also made it to the movies, especially Bollywood. Thus today, let’s talk about the Bollywoody Bus and how this vehicle has been incorporated in the story of the movies, within the representative songs.
Some of my favorite Bollywood songs, picturized on or within a bus are:
Bombay Goa… Bombay to Goa (1972). Legendary Kishore Kumar joins the bus travelers and has a great time with them singing this song after his car breaks down on the way to his destination.
Dekhana haire sochana… Bombay to Goa (1972). Amitabh Bachchan goes berserk singing this song and dancing in tune to save the heroine Aruna Irani’s life.
Aadmi musafir hai… Apnapan (1977). Jeetendra and Sulakshana Pandit are traveling in a bus, as a pair of singing beggars performs this song inside the bus.
Chahiye thoda pyar… Lahu Ke Do Rang (1979). Vinod Khanna is on an eve-teasing spree. He follows Shabana Azmi and tries to convince her into falling in love with him!
Kitne bhi tu karle sitam… Sanam Teri Kasam (1982). The situation of this song is also the same as the previous one. But, the only difference is the actors are different – Kamal Hasan and Reena Roy.
Zihal-e-muskin bakum-ba-ranjish bahar-e-hijra bechara dil hai… Ghulami (1985). I love this song, though I haven’t been able to see this movie, till now. But, it appears that Mithun Chakraborty is returning home from his army duty and travels with Anita Raaj, on (literally) a bus.
