After last night’s round of Battle of the Bands semifinals, The Palace is advancing to the finals. Here’s a brand new song from them that they debuted last night.
Last night was the third round of the Battle of the Bands semifinals at The Hi-Fi. In case you missed it, the competing bands included Moxxie, Chives, American Bombshell, Union Suit Rally, Audiodacity, and The Palace. At the end of the night, The Palace and Audiodacity ended up clutching the votes to advance.
With only one more round of semifinals to go, the date of the finals is quickly approaching. Be sure to get to The Vogue on February 15th to see the final battle, and cast your vote for the winner of the $10,000 grand prize and touring van.
But enough about the finals. We’re here today to congratulate The Palace for advancing, and review the new song they just dropped, “Whatchamacall’em”. Before we do that, here’s a little bit of info on The Palace.
The Palace is a five piece soul and rock band from Indianapolis, Indiana. Their members include Ray Hutchins (vocals), James Knott (guitar), Ben Marcus (guitar), Bill Eckhart (keys), and Cameron Helm (drums). But to get a better idea of who they are, you can just read their band’s bio:
“Alternating between sweet soulful vocal runs and unabashed lead guitar, the band is about having fun with a few breaks for tenderness. Although the sound will swell and have you dancing to chugging blues riffs about “whatchamacall’em”, the noise will regularly make way for vocals that hush the room. The Palace was named after the house that was the social center of the band and the feeling of being at an intimate party has never left the set. If rock wore a smile and soul a smirk, there you have The Palace.”
Still a relatively young band, The Palace had only released one song (their debut 2019 single, “Waves”), before last night. Now they’ve doubled the size of their discography with “Whatchamacall’em”. So let’s go ahead and take a look at it.
“Whatchamacall’em” starts off with a raw, unfiltered acoustic progression that instantly evokes the blues. But it doesn’t take long for the full band to join in, and for Ray Hutchins’ vocals to start soaring. When the full band comes in, the blues elements are turned down just a hair to make room for The Palace’s foundation of rock and soul.
There are two guitar solos in “Whatchamacall’em”, and they’re both pretty great. The first one comes in during the first half of the song, and only lasts for a few seconds before flitting out, and then coming back for round two later. Actually, the last minute and a half of “Whatchamacall’em” is just an extended jam with the guitar continuing its solo, building to an almost Free Bird-esque ending. But it’s not nearly as long, so don’t worry.
“Whatchamacall’em” definitely has an interesting structure to it, in that it’s essentially split up into two halves. The first half contains all the lyrics, and most of the transitions, while the second half just rides out one progression to the end. Turns out it makes for a pretty great song, especially when performed live.
Overall, “Whatchamacall’em” is a solid addition to The Palace’s repertoire. I didn’t end up being able to make it to the semifinals last night, but I wouldn’t be surprised if “Whatchamacall’em” was one of the reasons why The Palace advanced to the finals. Be sure to keep February 15th on your calendar so you can go see The Palace battle out the final round of the Battle of the Bands at The Vogue. They might just end up coming with even more new material to steal the show.
