Movie – Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966)
Yeh kali jab talak phool banke khile appeared in the Filmyug’s hit romrama Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966), directed by Raghunath Jhalani and produced by J Om Prakash. The movie starred Asha Parekh, Dharmendra, Sulochana, Balraj Sahni, Rajinder Nath, etc.
Ravi (Dharmendra) is a college’s senior student and is on the lookout for private tuitions to help his poor mother (Sulochana) in running the house. One day, he meets a junior student Kanchan (Asha Parekh) and his prank upsets her. Circumstances are such that he is given the opportunity to teach Kanchan. When Kanchan sees him as her tutor, he manages to convince her that he is not the one, who had played the prank with her, but his twin, Prakash.
The next day, Kanchan requests Ravi to excuse her from the classes so that she can visit a tea estate, alone, which her father was planning to buy. Ravi decides to play another prank with her and follows her on his bike. He catches her unawares and teases her to his heart’s content. On a visit to his home, she gets to know that there were no twins, ever. He had been playing pranks with her. Now, she decides to play a prank with him, as a result of which he falls ill. When she gets to know about it she pays a visit to his home and everything becomes hunky-dory between them.
Ravi passes his M.Sc. exams with flying colors. Soon, Kanchan’s father and Ravi’s mother realize what is happening between their children. The elders meet and decide to get them married. Ravi and Kanchan, happily, rush to meet each other. They see each other on the road and move toward a garden. There, they imagine how their future life would be and sing this song. One thing has been irking me about their future plans – the concept of the woman being a housewife and a child-making machine is chauvinistic.

Video – Yeh kali jab talak phool banke khile
Director of Photography is V Babasaheb.
The video opens with Asha Parekh rolling over the lawn. Dharmendra rolls toward her and tries to coax her to turn toward him. She pulls out a bunch of small flowers, tucked into her hair and begins the song. He takes the bunch of flowers and runs it over her face. She gets up and walks away.
Then, getting up, he also joins her in the song. She moves still further away from him and he follows her, around the terraced garden. Soon, the song peters out and the video ends as she runs down the sloped path toward the main road.
The playback of Yeh kali jab talak phool banke khile was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor for Asha Parekh and Dharmendra.
There is not much cultural influence on this typically filmi song. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for Asha Parekh’s graceful stance.
