Tik tik bole dil ki ghadi – Bappi/Alisha – Bappi Lahiri – Govinda/Kimi | Gair Kanooni (1989)

Movie – Gair Kanooni (1989)

Tik tik bole dil ki ghadi appeared in S M S Productions’ social drama Gair Kanooni (1989) or Illegal produced by Chetna M Modi and directed by Prayag Raaj. The hit movie starred Sridevi, Govinda, Rajnikanth, Kimi Katkar, Shashi Kapoor, Kader Khan, etc.

Honest Police Officer Kapil Khanna (Shashi Kapoor) and Dalpat Dalal’s (Kader Khan) wives have given birth to a boy and a girl, respectively, in the same hospital on the same day. Dalpat does not want a girl because he thinks a girl does not bring home money but only expenses. So, he exchanges the babies with the help of the owner of the hospital Robert D’Costa. They rope in the ward nurse for the purpose and kill her after the act is done. Thus, there is no evidence for the exchange of the babies. We have to remember that this was the time when paternity tests with DNA sampling were not prevalent.

Kapil Khanna’s wife dies due to the shock and he files a case in the court. One of the maidservants working with the hospital (Aruna Irani) is given the job of taking care of the female child. Kapil Khanna takes up the task of paying for the upbringing of the child. The maidservant brings up the girl without any education, as a thief. The girl Lakshmi (Sridevi) becomes very well-versed in stealing. But, she always yearns for the genuine love of real parents since Kapil Khanna refuses to accept her as his daughter. Kapil Khanna thinks that somewhere someplace his son would be grown up now. But, he does not know where.

At this point, Om Narayan (Govinda) is performing this dance with a female lead dancer and others.

Song – Tik tik bole dil ki ghadi

The music and the lyrics of Tik tik bole dil ki ghadi were created by Bappi Lahiri and Indeevar, respectively.

The man requests the girl to have a date with him for the whole night.

Video – Tik tik bole dil ki ghadi

Director of Photography is Lawrence D’Souza. Dance choreography is by Saroj Khan.

The video opens with Govinda beginning the breakdance, with some other dancers. He is waiting for someone. A girl is being dressed up by a designer. The girl is Kimi Katkar. Govinda begins to sing as well, waiting for her.

The 2 hands of a large grandfather clock are moving rapidly all around the clock-face in the background. Kimi Katkar laughs. Govinda and the female dancers are dancing on a large clock-face.

What appeared to be a stage till now, actually, is a studio where a shoot is happening. There is a change of dress and sets. Soon, the music rises to a crescendo and the song ends abruptly. The video also ends as all the dancers pause in a dance pose.

The song Tik tik bole dil ki ghadi was sung by Bappi Lahiri and Asha Bhonsle for various artists and Sridevi. Other artists are looking on.

Cultural Influence

This typically filmi song has the hero asking a girl to visit him at night. The dresses of the additional female dancers are a little peek-a-boo kind. Other than these being a little offensive, I liked the song because this is being said between a supposedly committed couple. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for Govinda’s dance.
