Movie – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)

This song, Zarasa jhoom loon main, was featured in Yash-Raj Films’ super duper hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), produced by Yash Chopra and directed by the debutante Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, etc.

Londoner Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), yearns to return to his native place Punjab. He lives with his wife Lajwanti or Lajjo (Farida Jalal) and daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chutki (Pooja Ruparel). Simran is a budding poet and fantasizes about a boy. Lajjo tells her daughter that dreams are dreams. They cannot come true.

One day, Punjab (India) resident Ajit (Satish Shah) sends a letter to Baldev, reminding him about a promise that they made to each other 20 years ago, i.e. to get Simran married to Ajit’s son Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi). Simran is disappointed that she would have to marry someone, she has not even met.

Meanwhile, one night, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) misbehaves with Baldev, in the latter’s shop at closing time and makes away with a box of beer, throwing the money at him. Baldev is furious and brands Raj a disgrace to India.

In the meanwhile, Raj and Simran’s friends decide to go on a trip across Europe, independent of each other. Raj’s father allows him to go on a tour of Europe. With a lot of difficulty, Simran convinces her strict father to allow her to go with her friends on the vacation. Consequently, Raj and Simran meet on the trip. He continuously flirts with her, which irritates her. In one of the stops, they go gallivanting around the place and miss the train. They would have to board the train at Zurich. Spending the night becomes a problem because of the cold weather. They have to stay together in one hotel-room. But, Simran prefers to stay in the barn. Raj follows her with some brandy. When he is almost asleep, she drinks the brandy and gets intoxicated. She sings this song in an inebriated condition.

The girl is completely drunk and is not in her senses. She doesn’t know what she is saying.

Video – Zarasa jhoom loon main

The cinematography is by Manmohan Singh. Saroj Khan-Farah Khan is credited with the dance choreography.

The video begins with a female voice beginning the song and Shah Rukh Khan removing his hat from his face. He is shocked and looks around for Kajol. She comes out of some hay stacked in the barn. She runs around inebriated. He follows her to make sure she does not get into trouble.

She also plays around in the snow wearing a red dress after breaking into a shop window for it. The scene changes to that of a swimming pool, in which she is swimming. Soon, the role reverses and Kajol appears to be in trouble. He picks her up on his shoulder and takes her away.

The song peters out and the video also ends there.

Asha Bhonsle and Abhijit have sung Zarasa jhoom loon main for Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. Other actors look on.

Cultural Influence

I love the way Asha Bhonsle Ma’am sings …thandi thandi pawan…The typically filmi song has been performed well though I am not very happy about Kajol’s dresses and her jumping around revealing her underwear. The video is watchable.
