This song, Rukja O dil diwane, was featured in Yash-Raj Films’ super-duper hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), produced by Yash Chopra and directed by the debutante Aditya Chopra. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, etc.

Londoner Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), yearns to return to his native place Punjab. He lives with his wife Lajwanti or Lajjo (Farida Jalal) and daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chutki (Pooja Ruparel). Simran is a budding poet and fantasizes about a boy. Lajjo tells her daughter that dreams are dreams. They cannot come true.

One day, Punjab (India) resident Ajit (Satish Shah) sends a letter to Baldev, reminding him about a promise that they made to each other 20 years ago, i.e. to get Simran married to Ajit’s son Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi). Simran is disappointed that she would have to marry someone, she has not even met.

Meanwhile, one night, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) misbehaves with Baldev, in the latter’s shop at closing time and makes away with a box of beer, throwing the money at him. Baldev is furious and brands Raj a disgrace to India.

In the meanwhile, Raj and Simran’s friends decide to go on a trip across Europe, independent of each other. Raj’s father allows him to go on a tour of Europe. With a lot of difficulties, Simran convinces her strict father to allow her to go with her friends on the vacation. Consequently, Raj and Simran meet at the station. He continuously flirts with her, which irritates her. In one of the stops, both the groups go to a club, where Simran introduces Raj to the other patrons saying he would be performing that day. That she thinks would be an act of effective revenge. But, after displaying some of his buffoonery, Raj performs this song.

Video – Rukja O dil diwane

The cinematography is by Manmohan Singh. Saroj Khan-Farah Khan is credited with the dance choreography.

The video begins with Kajol feeling embarrassed. Shah Rukh Khan comes toward the camera in tune with the music. Everybody appreciates the performance. Some girls wearing red mini dresses appear from behind the stage.

This was not a planned occurrence in the movie. How can a properly choreographed dance group come to join Shah Rukh Khan? Kajol is extremely offended. Shah Rukh Khan performs some twists with an older female dancer with a colorful costume.

Then, he throws his black coat on Kajol, who is still irritated due to his flirting. He tells her that he is not interested in her but her friend. SRK pulls up a girl, playing the character of Kajol’s friend, from her chair and dances with her.

Kajol is about to leave the place. But, he runs to her and compels her to dance with him. They stop at a pose together as the song rises to a crescendo and stops. The video also ends there. The large space not only the stage but also the seating area has been used very well for the dance.

Udit Narayan has sung Rukja O dil diwane for Shah Rukh Khan. Kajol and other actors look on.

Cultural Influence

The typically filmi song has been performed well. The video is watchable for the same.
