Today’s fourth post is about Dharmendra-Hema Malini songs. Hemu Aunty, her mother Jaya Chakarvorti (Jaya Maami) and my Mom were fans of Dharmendra since a long time. Dharam Uncle would look like my maternal uncle, though my maternal uncle’s complexion was on the darker side. So, when Hemu Aunty got a chance to work with Dharam Uncle, they were all elated.
Hema Malini Aunty worked up a beautiful chemistry with Dharam Uncle in their first movies together Tum Haseen Main Jawan (1970) and Sharaafat (1970) and it continued for a long time. The professional relationship developed into a personal one to culminate into their marriage in 1980. I did not have much idea about their love relationship. Mom brought up my sister and me teaching us not to gossip or talk about others’ personal lives. In any case, we were children then; too small to understand anything.
Bollywood and Dharmendra-Hema Malini Songs
Some of my favorite Bollywood duets of Dharmendra and Hema Malini are:
Kitne din yun dil tarsenge… Naya Zamana (1971)
A B C D chodo… Raja Jani (1972)
Khiladi hai koi… Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) I love the South Indian accent of Asha Bhonsle Ma’am while singing this song.
Gir gaya jhumka… Jugnu (1973)
Main jatt yamla pagla deewana… Pratigya (1975). This is the original song from which the movie Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) and its sequels were made.
Koi haseena jab rooth jati hai toh… Sholay (1975)
Aaja teri yaad aayi… Charas (1976)
Kisi shayar ki ghazal Dream Girl… Dream Girl (1977)
Jaan ki kasam sach kehte hain hum… Azaad (1978)
