Qualification Summary
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/15/2019. Basic Requirements:
Basic Requirements for both Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Physician Assistant Specific Requirements Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations AND a bachelor’s degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. PAs on VA rolls prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified remain exempt from the NCCPA certification requirement. However, a PA who subsequently became or becomes certified is no longer exempt and must maintain certification as a condition of employment. Nurse Practitioner Specific Requirements Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. Preferred certification in psychiatry or mental/ behavioral health. Nurse Practitioner Grade Determinations: Refer VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard, to determine the grade requirements as follows: Nurse II Nurse III Physician Assistant Grade Determinations: Refer to VA Regulation, VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G8, Physician Assistant Qualification Standard, to determine the grade requirements as follows: Full Grade. Intermediate Grade. Senior Grade. Chief Grade. Preferred experience/certification in mental health/psychiatry. NOTE: Applicant’s education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board and utilized in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. Ability to hear whispered voice. Emotional stability. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
