Movie – Doodh Ka Karz (1990)

The song Been bajaoon tujhe bulaoon… was featured in the Aftab Pictures’ hit realistic fantasy Doodh Ka Karz (1990) produced by Salim Akhtar and directed by Ashok Gaekwad. The movie was made in Hindi as well as Marathi (Dudhache Upkar). The movie starred Jackie Shroff, Neelam, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri, a wonder snake :), etc.

Parvati (Aruna Irani) and her husband Gangu (Kuldeep Pawar) are snake charmers. She and her just-born son Suraj witness Gangu’s the wrongful accusation of theft by Sampath (Prem Chopra), Bhairav Singh (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) and Raghuveer Singh (Amrish Puri). Then, the bad guys kill the innocent man in front of his family. Parvati cremates his body and swears revenge. She and Suraj are taken care of Dharma Lohar (Goga Kapoor). When Suraj (Jackie Shroff) grows up into a young man, Parvati thinks that it’s time for revenge. Dharma and she, also, plan to marry Suraj with Dharma’s daughter Kajri (Varsha Usgaonkar). But, soon, she finds out that Suraj is in love with Raghuveer’s daughter, Reshma (Neelam) and may not be in a mindset to avenge his father’s death.

Parvati had fed a baby snake years ago, with her own milk. He was like her own child for her. The villains trap her and Suraj and compel them to call the snake, to kill him. They torture her so much that Suraj has no other alternative than to comply with their wishes. He plays the been (a type of clarinet) to attract the snake. And the snake ‘hears’ the sound of the been to come to the place. Science has proven that snakes do not have ears. They follow the movement of the been in front of them to sway from one side to the other. Otherwise, it can only sense vibrations on the ground. This kind of situation where a snake ‘hears’ a been several kilometers away, can happen only in the imagination of the writer.

Song – Been bajaoon tujhe bulaoon

The song Been bajaoon tujhe bulaoon was penned by Anand Bakshi and set to tune by Anu Malik.

The man beckons the snake through this song. But, he also requests the snake not to come to them.

Video – Been bajaoon tujhe bulaoon

The cinematography is by Akram Khan.

The video opens with Aruna Irani requesting Jackie Shroff not to do what he was about to do. Jackie Shroff begins to sing. Sadashiv Amrapurkar slaps her for her vigorous appeal. The snake ‘hears’ the song and the music of the been. He leaves the sanctuary of the temple, he lives in and tries to find a way to reach his foster family.

Amrish Puri, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Prem Chopra, Raza Murad, Bob Cristo and their henchmen derive sadistic satisfaction from the predicament of Jackie Shroff and Aruna Irani. The snake seems to be collecting other members from his community of the crawling reptiles from everywhere. The bad guys get a large cage full of mongooses.

Soon, Jackie Shroff throws the been and it breaks as it hits the floor from the top of a fleet of stairs. Yunus Pervez is happy. At this moment, the song peters out and the video ends as the camera focuses on Jackie Shroff.

Artists

Been bajaoon tujhe bulaoon was sung by Mohammad Aziz for Jackie Shroff. Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Prem Chopra, Raza Murad, Bob Cristo, Yunus Pervez and others look on. At this point, the large collection of snakes has also to be mentioned. 🙂

Cultural Influence

Pitru Paksha is going on at this moment. This is a set of 15 consecutive days post Anantha Chaturdashi and before Navaratri begins. During this time, Hindus offer obeisance to their ancestors. It works this way, e.g. my paternal grandfather expired a day before Anantha Chaturdashi. So, we offer the Shraddha not only on that day but also on a Triyodashi during the Pitru Paksha. Offering prayers on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the last day of the Pitru Paksha, also has a special significance, though our ancestors might have expired on any day, during any month of the year.

Yesterday was Matru Navami. This day also has a special significance, in that; we can absolve all the Karmic debts we have toward our mother. Coming to this song – the snake comes to save his foster mother and repays his debt toward her (hence the name of the movie is Doodh Ka Karz). On the other hand, the main lead, Jackie Shroff repays his debt toward his father by fighting his killers. An interesting sequence, this, the artists are good, including the snake :). The video is watchable for the different concept and picturization.
