A widower Raghu (Jayant) has 3 children – Lakshmi (Baby Farida), Ramu (Master Shahid) and Munna (Master Anwar) and is in debt. Blinded during an industrial accident, he loses his job and is admitted to the hospital. While returning home, he overhears the heartless landlord saying that instead of being blinded he should have died and thus the children could be placed in an orphanage. He leaves the place and the landlord throws out the children. Due to various situations, the 3 kids separate from each other.
Ramu (Sunil Dutt), who has been brought up by a theater troupe owner, has grown into a handsome young man and plays the lead character of Lord Krishna in different plays for his mentor’s troupe. When his mentor reveals that he brought him up to marry his daughter, Ramu runs away, in his Lord Krishna costume. He reaches the home of Parmanand (Agha), who has a daughter Saroj (B Saroja Devi). Parmanand assigns Ramu the job of a cook, though the younger man does not have any culinary skills. Ramu and Saroj fall in love with each other. Ramu is unable to cook properly. On Saroj’s recommendation, Paramanand appoints Ramu his daughter’s music teacher. Soon, Ramu and Saroj’s relationship comes out in the open in front of her father. This happens when a letter that Ramu writes for Saroj falls in the older man’s hands. When Paramanand gets angry and Ramu sings a Bhajan, Paramanand accepts the youngsters’ relationship and decides to get them married, soon.
With the green signal from Paramanand, the lead pair goes on a date and sings this song at that time.
