Soundtrack Roundup: Russian Doll, Season 1

0

While die-hard fans of Natasha Lyonne’s “Russian Doll” anxiously await the second season, binge watching the first in preparation, we decided it’d be nice to go over the music heard in the first season. If Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” isn’t already stuck in your head, it will be soon.

For those who haven’t yet watched it, “Russian Doll” is a dark comedy starring Natasha Lyonne as Nadia, a woman who becomes trapped in the night of her own birthday party, and can’t escape it alive. Unlike some shows, the soundtrack to “Russian Doll” actually ties in well with the plot, and can offer some perspective on Nadia’s emotional roller coaster. But don’t go browsing through their lyrics searching for season two hints.

If you’ve seen the inspiration for “Russian Doll”, “Groundhog Day”, you might be surprised that Sunny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” didn’t find its way into the show. But even without it, the first season of “Russian Doll” still manages to provide a pretty stellar soundtrack. And it still retains the same effect with Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up”. It’s eclectic mix has everything from psych rock to French pop and overlooked classics, along with plenty of trippy tracks that mirror the mind bending journey that Lyonne’s Nadia goes through.
