Sony Music India has re-released the song Pani pani re from Maachis (1996) in the melodious voice of Monali Thakur, recently. The original song was rendered by the stalwart Lata Mangeshkar. The lyrics were penned by Gulzar and music was composed by Vishal Bharadwaj. This new song has been recreated with new sounds, besides recruiting the voice of the younger singer. The video has been directed by Shiraj Bhattacharya. The video features Monali Thakur herself. Her rendition of the song may be good. But, she is unable to portray the emotions that Tabu was able to in the original song.
The movie Maachis (1996) was a political thriller directed by Gulzar Sahab. The crux of the story is an imaginary (well, not really) incident during the Sikh insurgency of the 1980s in Punjab and had shown the political system labeling and killing any of the residents after branding them as terrorists very easily without any accountability to anyone.
