Today is Lord Krishna’s birthday. Among others, Bollywood celebrates Janmashtami, as well, today. So, today, I have selected some Bollywood songs that describe the eternal love between Lord Krishna and Radha, His eternal Consort.
During school; I was one of my teachers’ favorite students, involved in extra-curricular activities like dance. Post my 12th grade, which I did in my own school, my Mom was requested to choreograph a dance for the Parents’ Day that year. Accordingly, Mom taught me the Navrang (1959) song Arey jare hat natkhat na choore mera ghoonghat and I performed it for the students. The girl, who was playing Radha in the song, decided to take over on her own, post a few rehearsals and the girls stopped coming home for practice.
We were invited to watch the performance and we did go despite my being unwell. In the course of the dance, the girl playing Lord Krishna had to catch hold of the hand of the girl playing Radha. The first girl forgot the crucial step and the other girl went to the first one saying hold my hand. I found this so revolting. Lord Krishna will catch hold of Radha’s hand and she would not give it to Him, particularly when she is offended by Him. It was obvious that the girl had not understood the concept behind the dance. Mom and I left immediately without watching the rest of the performances.
