Qualification Summary
Basic Requirements:
– U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
– All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R).
– All applicants must have an advanced certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) from the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R)
– English Language Proficiency. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C., Chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity.
– Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate’s degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. Grade Requirements:
(a) Experience. To qualify at the GS-09 level, you must possess at least one (1) year of the following types of experience comparable to the next lower (GS-08) grade level, that fully meets the knowledge, skills and abilities at that level. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: Experience in a fully functional advanced DRT capacity, carrying out assigned tasks with little to no supervision while performing varying and special or complex radiographic and MRI procedures, advanced knowledge on the physics of superconducting magnets and relation on human anatomy in the field of medical imaging, performing specialized diagnostics on the cross sectional anatomy of the body in relation to soft tissues and vessels, specific knowledge of image acquisition in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and experience in independently determining frequency surface coil requirements for specific anatomical areas. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
– Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures
– Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others and healthcare providers
– Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure
– Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography
– Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions References: VA Handbook 5005/ 53, Part II, Appendix G25 – Title 38 Hybrid, Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist Qualification Standard.
