BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree with a major in a biological science that includes the following course work: 1) at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND 2) at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects; AND 3) at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.OR Combination of education and experience that is equivalent to a major in a biological science. This combination must includes 1) at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects as described above; AND 2) 12 semester hours in zoology subjects as described above; AND 3) 9 semester hours in botany as described above PLUS appropriate experience or additional education. You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:One year of professional wildlife experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience: prepare wildlife portions of environmental assessments, perform environmental impact analyses on threatened and endangered species, plan and conduct wildlife field inventories and monitoring studies, interpret data and prepare wildlife management plans.OR have completed 3 years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in wildlife biology or a directly related field.OR have completed a combination of graduate education and experience which together equals 100% of the requirements. You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:One year of wildlife biologist’s experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience: analysis of wildlife resource conditions; formulation or recommendations on policies and procedures; study of wildlife populations, development and coordination of annual plan of work for assigned area of wildlife program or project; or work that demonstrated a professional understanding of wildlife biology and applying it to an intensive wildlife program. Work at this level consists of investigating and analyzing data on wildlife resources, identifying conservation issues, and recommending or implement solutions that satisfy resources management objectives. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-12. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-12. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
